Nunbait were an Australian punk rock band formed in 1989. They joined the thriving inner-city music scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s that featured artists such as The Cosmic Psychos, Frenzal Rhomb, and Kiss My Poodles Donkey, as well as Tumbleweed, The Meanies and Nitocris. Nunbait were leaders in the second wave of punk inspired bands that followed the Black Eye Records groups, such as Thug, Lubricated Goat and Box the Jesuit.

History

Nunbait were formed in Sydney in 1989 with Shaun Butcher on guitar, Jay Doherty on drums, Ian Fraser on vocals and Mark Guthrie on bass guitar and vocals. [1] Butcher and Guthrie had been in bands in Townsville; Guthrie then joined Fraser's Brisbane proto-grunge 1960s garage punk-inspired combo Dementia 13 (1984–1988). [2] In the late-1980s, Butcher, Fraser and Guthrie had each migrated separately from Queensland to the Sydney suburb of Newtown, where they formed the band with Doherty, a native of Mudgee, who took up drums despite limited experience. Doherty named them as Numbait as a pun on jailbait. Their music was referred to as "noise rock". [3] Doherty died in 1990 and was replaced by Mathew Fante on drums. [1]

The band's first release was 500-copy run of a self-pressed single, "Track Trauma" (June 1990) on Masterbait Music Inc. [1] After winning a battle of the bands at Sydney's Lansdowne Hotel, Nunbait secured a contract with local underground label, Waterfront Records, [4] and released an extended play, The Hub (named after a Newtown porn theatre), in the same year, which was produced by Stu Spasm. [1] It has six original tracks, albeit one, "The Melting Hour", had its origins in Dementia 13 days. [4] Jack Marx of Drum Media described the EP as "a blisteringly nasty little piece of rock and roll work." [1]

Nunbait supported gigs by Butthole Surfers (Burland Hall Newtown, 1991), Mudhoney (Phoenician Club Sydney, 1990), Einstürzende Neubauten and The Beasts of Bourbon (Phoenician Club Sydney 1991), Nirvana (Selinas, Sydney, February 1992), [5] Helmet (1991), Fugazi (1991) as well as performing shows with Superchunk and fellow local underground acts Tumbleweed, Cosmic Psychos, and the Celibate Rifles. Shane Danielson of The Sydney Morning Herald described their style as "not for the faint-hearted. Loud, intense and confrontational, theirs is a wild, lurching noise that hurls itself against you." [6]

A follow-up single, "Nowhere Fast", mixed by Sub Pop's Jack Endino and Mudhoney’s Mark Arm, was released on Waterfront in 1991, charting at #3 in the independent street music charts. Local label Survival issued a four-track EP, Spinout, in June 1992. [7] The band's final release, on tiny Melbourne label Hippy Knight, was a hastily mixed album, Busted, the production of which left the members extremely dissatisfied. They disbanded soon after. The band reformed for a short tour (with The Hard Ons) in 2010.

Tumbleweed are an Australian rock group formed in 1990 in Tarrawanna. Three of their studio albums appeared on the ARIA top 50: Tumbleweed (1992), Galactaphonic (1995), and Return to Earth (1996). Australian musicologist Ian McFarlane described the group as the "ultimate stoner's band for the 1990s. From within a post-psychedelic underground haze that evoked the spirit of 1969, [they] came on with lashings of fuzz-drenched wah wah guitar riffs, hard-driving beats, languid vocal melodies and more hair than any band had a right to possess!"

Eric Gaffney is an American songwriter and recording artist, and has been home recording on cassette since 1981. An active participant in the Western Mass hardcore scene, in 1983 he founded, wrote songs for, and drummed with Grey Matter, opening hall shows with Jerry's Kids, F.U.s, The Freeze, Big Boys, Raw Power, Adrenalin O.D., Siege, 7 Seconds, Outpatients, Pajama Slave Dancers, Da Stupids, and others.

Dekema Records is a record label that first achieved notice in the 1990s for releasing the EP "Stripped" by the seminal grunge rock group the Fire Ants. Dekema used music producer Jack Endino to record the band at Word of Mouth studios in 1992. Endino is best known for producing "Bleach" by Nirvana and his work with Sub Pop artists such as Mudhoney and Soundgarden.

Jack Endino is an influential audio engineer and musician particularly associated with Seattle label Sub Pop and the grunge movement.

Mr Floppy were an Australian alternative rock, punk rock and oi! band formed in 1989 by Tim Aylward on guitar, Mick Carroll on guitar, Paul Johnson on bass guitar and vocals and Joseph Kennedy on drums. They issued three studio albums on Zombie Penis Death Records, which were distributed by Waterfront Records, Breakfast (1991), Gratuitous (1992) and The Unbearable Lightness of Being a Dickhead (1993). They enjoyed a cult following; however, the band broke up in 1994. They were compared to TISM throughout their career, with some people actually claiming Mr Floppy were a TISM side project, although the band members hated such comparisons.

The Plunderers were an Australian band which formed in May 1984 in Canberra. The group's founding mainstays were Nic Dalton on bass guitar and vocals and Stevie Plunder on guitar and vocals. The group issued three mini-albums, Trust Us, Sarah's not Falling in Love, and Home Movie (1992); a live album, 13.7.91 Live! Live! Live! (1991); and three albums, No Era Is Safe (1986), Half A Cow (1986), and Banana Smoothie Honey (1992). Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, described their sound as "a punky brand of power pop that mixed frantic guitar riffs, sharp harmonies and diamond-hard pop melodies" before starting to "explore a more tripped-out kind of psychedelic revivalism". In 1989 Dalton and Plunder and their drummer, Geoff Milne, formed a side project, Hippy Dribble, playing their more psychedelic songs. In December 1990 the trio also formed Captain Denim to play "more laid-back songs mostly ... influenced by the likes of Buffalo Springfield, Country & Western and folk rock". Both these groups issued material including a split album, Silver Apples/Fade in 1994. In 1992, Dalton joined US band The Lemonheads and former Plunderers' keyboard player Andy Lewis and Plunder formed The Whitlams with Tim Freedman. Plunder died on 25 January 1996, at the age of 32 years and Lewis died on 12 February 2000, at the age of 33 years.
