It is a meeting point of Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims due to the various pilgrimage sites on the different hills of Hajo. To the Hindus, the Manikut Parbat of Hajo is the site of the 10th-century temple ruins and the 11th- to 16th-century temples complex for Vaishnavism as well as shrines of Shaivism and Shaktism. To the Buddhists, particularly from Bhutan and Tibet, Assam is where the Buddha died and the Hayagriva temple in Hajo is a part of the sacred geography of the Buddha. Sarbananda Sonowal is an Indian politician from Assam who is the current Cabinet Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Cabinet Minister of AYUSH in the Government of India. He is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from Assam and also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs. He is a former Chief Minister of Assam and a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (India) in Assam Legislative Assembly. Sonowal earlier served as the Assam state President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2012 to 2014 and again in 2015 to 2016. He has also served as the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of India, from 2014 to 2016. He was chosen to be the Chief Minister of Assam after the 2016 Assam Legislative Assembly election and he became the first Chief Minister of Assam from Bharatiya Janata Party. During the cabinet reshuffle on 7 July 2021, he was inducted Cabinet minister in the 2nd Modi Cabinet.

Renuka Devi Barkataki was an Indian politician from Assam. She was the Union Minister of state for education, social welfare and culture in the Janata Party government led by prime minister Morarji Desai from 1977 to 1979. In 1962, she was elected to the 3rd Lok Sabha from Barpeta constituency as an Indian National Congress candidate. In 1972, she was elected to the Assam legislative Assembly from Hajo constituency. In 1977, she was elected to the 6th Lok Sabha from Gauhati constituency as a Janata Party candidate. Later, she became the honorary secretary of the Assam state branch of the Indian Red Cross Society. She died on 14 August 2017 in a government hospital due to injuries.
