Nuzaht Kazmi (born 26 October 1957) is an art historian and critic. She was a faculty and the founding head of the Department of Art History and Appreciation at Faculty of Fine Arts, Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.

She is a researcher and author, her specialities include Islamic art, Mughal art, and Medieval and European influences on late medieval and early modern Indian art. She has authored ‘Islamic Art: The Past and the Modern’, 'Awraq-e Musavvir, Mughal Art of Portraiture' and others.

Career

She started her career by teaching art history in Jamia Millia Islamia. Later she founded a department 'Art History and Appreciation' there. [1] [2]

Work & Reception

She has been a scholar and faculty for more than 4 decades. The disciplines of art history and criticism frequently reference her writings. Her specialities include notably Islamic art, Mughal art, post-European mediaeval and modern Indian art. [3] Kazmi attends the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies as a Commonwealth Scholar. [4]

She has delivered lecture at institution of national and international importance like Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Delhi, [5] and National Gallery of Modern Arts, Nehru Centre, London University. [6]

Islamic Art

In 2009, she authored a book Islamic Art: The Past and the Modern . [7] The book discusses how Islamic art evolved in tandem with all other artistic genres. From its earliest forms, it has taken from different cultural traditions, and it still does. The book looks at the artistic works that the Islamic culture has generated over the ages, from its origins to contemporary interpretations. Kazmi has blended the inclusive and exclusive characteristics of this great tradition from all over the world with the sensitivity and seriousness that this particular sort of art demands. [8]

Mughal Art

Her work “Awraq-e Musavvir, Mughal Art of Portraiture" [9] is notable in Mughal art history. [10] The entire body of Mughal Portrait paintings is examined in this book. It explores the topic from a historical, social, political, and cultural perspective. It talks about how Mughal emperors were not just art enthusiasts but also experts. Furthermore, Kazmi has investigated the gender and sovereignty themes in the context of portraiture. [11] [12]

Saifuddin Kitchlew was an Indian independence activist, barrister, politician and later a leader of the peace movement. A member of Indian National Congress, he first became Punjab Provincial Congress Committee head and later the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in 1924. He is most remembered for the protests in Punjab after the implementation of Rowlatt Act in March 1919, after which on 10 April, he and another leader Satyapal, were secretly sent to Dharamsala. A public protest rally against their arrest and that of Gandhi, on 13 April 1919 at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, led to the infamous Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He was also a founding member of Jamia Millia Islamia. He was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize in 1952.

Mohammad Ajmal Khan, better known as Hakim Ajmal Khan, was a physician in Delhi, India, and one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University. He also founded another institution, Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College, better known as Tibbia College, situated in Karol Bagh, Delhi. He was the only Muslim to chair a session of the Hindu Mahasabha. He became the university's first chancellor in 1920 and remained in office until his death in 1927.

Education is based on three-tier model which includes primary schools, followed by secondary schools and tertiary education at universities or other institutes of same level. Education Department of the Government of Delhi is a premier body which looks into the educational affairs. The RTE right to education states that children from the age of 6 to 14 have to compulsorily be educated. 25% of the seats in all private schools are also reserved for the under-privileged children. Tertiary education is administrated by the Directorate of Higher Education.

Najma Akhtar is an Indian academic and academic administrator. Since 12 April 2019, she has been the Vice Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia, an Indian university and served their till 12 November 2023. She is also the first woman to hold the post in JMI.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2019 Jamia Millia Islamia attack</span> Attack on a University campus in India

The Jamia Millia Islamia attack refers to the forceful entry by Delhi police into the Jamia Millia Islamia university during a confrontation with student protesters that started outside the campus on 15 December 2019. Hundreds of police officers forcefully entered the campus and detained more than a hundred students during the confrontation with the protesters. The police used batons and tear gas to disperse protesters. The police also entered the university library and washrooms and in the process of the violence ransacked parts of it. The visuals of students being dragged and assaulted by the police were telecast by news channels. About two hundred people were injured and were admitted to AIIMS and the Holy Family Hospital.

Nuzhat Parveen Khan is an Indian academician and author who served as the dean of Bennett University's School of Law. She has formerly served as the dean of Jamia Millia Islamia's Faculty of Law and is now a professor at the university. She has authored dozen of books including Women and Child related Laws, Comparative Constitutional Law and Globalisation of Professional Legal Education Constitutional Conspectus.
