OSL Consulting is an independent Gas and Oil design consultancy and engineering and project management company headquartered in Kingston upon Hull, United Kingdom. It also has offices in Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth. [1] Its employees include engineers, consultants and project managers, providing services to the oil, gas and energy sectors. [2] [3] [4]
Project management is the practice of initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing the work of a team to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria at the specified time. The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals within the given constraints. This information is usually described in project documentation, created at the beginning of the development process. The primary constraints are scope, time, quality and budget. The secondary—and more ambitious—challenge is to optimize the allocation of necessary inputs and apply them to meet pre-defined objectives.
Kingston upon Hull, usually abbreviated to Hull, is a port city and unitary authority in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It lies upon the River Hull at its confluence with the Humber Estuary, 25 miles (40 km) inland from the North Sea, 50 miles (80 km) east of Leeds, 34 miles (55 km) southeast of York and 54 miles (87 km) northeast of Sheffield. With a population of 260,645 (mid-2018 est.), Hull is the fourth-largest city in Yorkshire and the Humber.

It is Scotland's third most populous city, one of Scotland's 32 local government council areas and the United Kingdom's 39th most populous built-up area, with an official population estimate of 196,670 for the city of Aberdeen and 228,800 for the local council area.
Founded in 2005, [5] incorporated as Optimus Services Limited, [2] it is today known as OSL Consulting. The company started work on small offshore modification projects and terminal design, evolving to deliver a range of services, from feasibility studies to large design projects across the world. [3]
OSL Consulting provides front-end engineering and design optimisation for Oil and Gas Processing, [4] Transport and Storage - onshore, offshore [1] and subsea. [6] OSL works in the energy sector, including environmentally friendly technologies such as carbon capture, Biofuel and Biogas. [3]
Front-end loading (FEL), also referred to as pre-project planning (PPP), front-end engineering design (FEED), feasibility analysis, conceptual planning, programming/schematic design and early project planning, is the process for conceptual development of projects in processing industries such as upstream oil and gas, petrochemical, natural gas refining, extractive metallurgy, Waste to Energy, and pharmaceuticals. This involves developing sufficient strategic information with which owners can address risk and make decisions to commit resources in order to maximize the potential for success.
Multi-disciplinary design optimization (MDO) is a field of engineering that uses optimization methods to solve design problems incorporating a number of disciplines. It is also known as multidisciplinary system design optimization (MSDO).
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the process of capturing waste carbon dioxide usually from large point sources, such as a cement factory or biomass power plant, transporting it to a storage site, and depositing it where it will not enter the atmosphere, normally an underground geological formation. The aim is to prevent the release of large quantities of CO
2 into the atmosphere from heavy industry. It is a potential means of mitigating the contribution to global warming and ocean acidification of carbon dioxide emissions from industry and heating. Although CO
2 has been injected into geological formations for several decades for various purposes, including enhanced oil recovery, the long term storage of CO
2 is a relatively new concept. Direct air capture is a type of CCS which scrubs CO
2 from ambient air rather than a point source.
OSL has its main client base in the gas processing and transport/storage [1] sectors and has worked on projects in Germany, Norway, Africa, North America and the Middle East. The company has worked on projects for Total, BP, Perenco, I. M. Skaugen, Murphy, EKB, [1] Scottish and Southern Energy and ConocoPhillips. [6]

In 2008, OSL, Freightliner Road, in Hull took on the EKB project. [1] The EKB Project is based in north-west Germany in Etzel, 30 km south of Wilhelmshaven. [1] The project plan designated the three companies to build an innovative storage facility for natural gas. [1] OSL was initially appointed to supervise the Front End Engineering Design stage of the project in Copenhagen by EKB (a joint venture company formed between BP, Dong Energy, and Gazprom Germania). [1] As the project developed, EKB asked OSL to modify the design. [1] This demand eventually led to the doubling in size of the firm's team of engineers. [1] Nick Jones, a principal director at OSL's head office, commented on this issue by stating,
In late 2010, the project's construction and commissioning phase was under the supervision of OSL's technical team. [1] In the meantime, a new design team was formed to finish some of the detailed engineering work. [1] In addition, OSL assisted EKB in shifting the facility from an unmanned operation to a fully staffed operation. [1] OSL is currently providing full engineering support service to EKB. [1] Overall, the facility is connected to the Dutch gas transmission system by a 60 km pipeline. [1] Allowing it access to one of the most important natural gas trading hubs in Europe. [1]
In 2012, OSL were awarded their first project in Nigeria. [5] The firm says it is well placed to secure more major contracts in Africa after completing the first stage of a multi-million pound fuel supply development near Lagos. This involved shaping the design and plans for the Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage and distribution facility at Apapa. [5]
Once completed, the $30m Apapa scheme will provide users with LPG - a cleaner alternative to the government-subsidised household kerosene, and regarded as the fuel of the future in Nigeria. [5] OSL have been working in partnership with Oando, Nigeria's largest Oil company, for the last five years. [5]
Uti Kronakegha, a representative of the NIgerian Government's Department of Petroeum Resource, said:

An oil platform, offshore platform, or offshore drilling rig is a large structure with facilities for well drilling to explore, extract, store, and process petroleum and natural gas which lies in rock formations beneath the seabed. Many oil platforms will also contain facilities to accommodate their workforce.
A floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons, and for the storage of oil. A FPSO vessel is designed to receive hydrocarbons produced by itself or from nearby platforms or subsea template, process them, and store oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker or, less frequently, transported through a pipeline. FPSOs are preferred in frontier offshore regions as they are easy to install, and do not require a local pipeline infrastructure to export oil. FPSOs can be a conversion of an oil tanker or can be a vessel built specially for the application. A vessel used only to store oil is referred to as a floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel.
