Ogugua Okonkwo, popularly known as Og Okonkwo, [1] is a Nigerian womenswear designer, [2] [3] [4] fashionista, [5] [6] [7] and the founder and creative director of the fashion brand Style Temple. [8] [9]

Biography

Okonkwo was raised in Enugu, Nigeria, and she studied laboratory science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka before delving into fashion design. Okonkwo launched Style Temple in 2012, after long stints training as a fashion assistant and junior designer at a few Abuja-based fashion labels.

Fashion

Style Temple, under Okonkwo's leadership, showcases its collection annually at the Lagos Fashion and Design Week. The brand has been hailed by Vogue, [10] Fashion Bomb Daily, [11] Elle, [12] Glamour, [13] and CNN [14] for its visionary take on womenswear.

She has several advisory positions including Industrie Africa and Jendaya, and has been an advisor to the MoMA, the Victoria & Albert Museum, UN, British Fashion Council and State of Fashion Netherlands.

JW Anderson is a UK fashion label, founded by Jonathan Anderson. Anderson, who is originally from Magherafelt in Northern Ireland established JW Anderson in 2008 and subsequently launched his fashion house in London. Lanre da Silva is a Nigerian fashion designer based in Lagos. Launched in 2005, her eponymous label includes couture, ready-to-wear, jewelry and hairpieces. Da Silva's collections often incorporate metallic fabrics, lace and African patterns, while referencing the 1940s or 1800s. The Africa Fashion Guide recognizes her as having "... created a name for herself in high fashion in Nigeria."

Her debut documentary "Black in Tokyo" premiered at the International Center of Photography at the ICP Museum in New York City in 2017. She also screened the film in Tokyo, Japan at Ultra Super New Gallery in Harajuku.

African design encompasses many forms of expression and refers to the forms of design from the continent of Africa and the African diaspora including urban design, architectural design, interior design, product design, art, and fashion design. Africa's many diverse countries are sources of vibrant design with African design influences visible in historical and contemporary art and culture around the world. The study of African design is still limited, particularly from the viewpoint of Africans, and the opportunity to expand its current definition by exploring African visual representations and introducing contemporary design applications remains immense.
