Olivia Boisson is an American ballet dancer. In 2013, she joined the corps de ballet at New York City Ballet, becoming the first black person to join the company in a decade.

Biography

Olivia Boisson was born in Queens, New York to Haitian immigrants. [1] She began dancing when she was six years old, training at The Ballet Arts School of Forest Hills in Forest Hills, Queens. In 2000, she studied classical ballet at the Dance Theatre of Harlem. In 2004, she enrolled as a full-time student at the School of American Ballet and was the only African-American dancer in her year. [2] [3] She was a recipient of the Mae L. Wein Award in 2012, joining the New York City Ballet as an apprentice that same year. [4] In December 2013, she became a member of the company's corps de ballet, becoming the first black dancer to join the company in a decade. [2]

Her repertoire at New York City Ballet has included roles in George Balanchine's ballets such as Prayer in Coppélia , Coffee in The Nutcracker , Chaconne , and The Four Temperaments . She has also danced as a princess in Peter Martins' Swan Lake and Cellos in Jerome Robbins' Fanfare . [4] As a member of the corps de ballet, she was an original cast member in JR's Les Bosquets . [4]

In 2018, in honor of Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday, Boisson was featured in Melika Dez and Jeremy McQueen's 100 FISTS, a photography series that featured black dancers in New York City. [5] That same year, Boissons and other members of New York City Ballet modeled for Puma's Spring/Summer collection and their Do You campaign. [6] [7]

Peter Martins is a Danish ballet dancer and choreographer. Martins was a principal dancer with the Royal Danish Ballet and with the New York City Ballet, where he joined George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and John Taras as balletmaster in 1981. He retired from dancing in 1983, having achieved the rank of danseur noble, becoming Co-Ballet Master-In-Chief with Robbins. From 1990 until January 2018, he was solely responsible for artistic leadership of City Ballet.

Wendy Whelan American ballet dancer (born 1967)

Wendy Whelan is an American ballet dancer. She was principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and performed with the company for 30 years, and toured in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Whelan has also been an influential guest artist with Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company. In 2019, Whelan was named Associate Artistic Director of New York City Ballet.

Patricia McBride

Patricia McBride is a ballerina who spent nearly 30 years dancing with the New York City Ballet. McBride joined the New York City Ballet in 1959. She became a principal in 1961, becoming the company's youngest principal. She danced with the company for 30 years, including roles created for her by choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins.

Janie Taylor is an American ballet dancer, répétiteur and costume designer. She joined New York City Ballet in 1998, was promoted to principal dancer in 2005 and left in 2014. She then started designing costumes and staging works by Justin Peck and Benjamin Millepied, before performing again as a member of the L.A. Dance Project.

Jonathan Stafford is an American ballet dancer and artistic director. He danced with the New York City Ballet (NYCB) as a principal dancer until his retirement in 2014, then he served as a ballet master. He became the artistic director of NYCB in 2019.

Chase Finlay is an American ballet dancer and a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet.

Aesha Ash

Aesha Ash is an American ballet dancer and teacher. She danced numerous leading roles with as a member of New York City Ballet's corps de ballet and as a soloist with Béjart Ballet and Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company. Following her retirement from performing, she founded The Swan Dreams Project in 2011 to dispel stereotypes about Black women in ballet. In 2020, she became the first African American female faculty member at the School of American Ballet.

Alexandra Waterbury is an American ballet dancer and fashion model. In September 2018 she began a lawsuit against her former boyfriend and his employer—principal dancer Chase Finlay and New York City Ballet—and several other parties, alleging that the individuals named shared sexually explicit images and videos of Waterbury without her consent, and that the institutions named were co-liable.

Georgina Pazcoguin is an American ballerina. She is a soloist with the New York City Ballet, and is known for challenging racism in ballet, and for performing on Broadway.

Unity Phelan is an American ballet dancer. She joined the New York City Ballet in 2013 and was promoted to principal dancer in 2021. In October 2021, Phelan was promoted to Principal dancer. Outside of the company, she had also danced in films John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and I'm Thinking of Ending Things.

Indiana Woodward is a French-born ballet dancer. She joined the New York City Ballet in 2012, and was promoted to principal dancer in 2021.
