History

Omega Graduate School traces its origins to the Oxford Task Force (1974–1981), a group of professionals who explored how higher education might foster constructive social change. The task force recommended establishing a freestanding graduate institution for mature adult learners that would integrate faith and the social sciences. The school was chartered in 1981 under the leadership of Hollis L. Green, who served as president and chancellor until 2008. [3]

Located in the Crystal Springs community of Rhea County, Tennessee, the campus was developed in a retreat-like setting intended to provide opportunities for academic, personal, and spiritual growth. From its earliest years, the institution emphasized interdisciplinary research and the integration of religion and society, awarding degrees such as the Master of Letters (MLitt) in Family Life Education and Organizational Leadership, and the Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil/PhD) in social research. [3]

The doctoral program was structured around coursework, research seminars, and a dissertation, with areas of study including social research, philosophy, leadership, and communications. Students were also required to participate in intensive research residencies at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and at Oxford University in the United Kingdom, reflecting the institution’s adoption of the European tutorial method alongside American graduate education models. [3]

Over the following decades, Omega Graduate School developed a niche in American higher education by combining rigorous academic standards with an emphasis on adult learning, self-directed research, and interdisciplinary approaches to social problems. The institution became accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools and authorized by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. [3]

Academics

Master of Letters

This 32-credit program is structured for both professional advancement and as preparation for doctoral study. Coursework explores organizational systems, leadership theory, human relations, ethics, and social change, culminating in a capstone integration project. [4]

Doctor of Philosophy

The program also consists of a dissertation phase following doctoral candidacy, whereby the student begins the process of conducting original sociological research. Successful completion of the dissertation leads to graduation. This process typically requires an additional 2–3 years to complete. [4]

Doctor of Social Leadership

The Doctor of Social Leadership is a professional doctorate offered by Omega Graduate School. The program emphasizes applied scholarship and is intended to prepare graduates for leadership roles in religion and society with a focus on addressing social problems and fostering social change. Coursework typically includes studies in sociology, leadership, and Christian worldview. While comparable in scope to the Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree, the DSL is oriented toward religious leadership within the social professions rather than parish ministry. [5]

Graduate certificates

In addition to degree programs, Omega Graduate School offers non-degree certificates and Focus of Study options, including certificates in Gracism Studies, Clinical Sociology, Medical Sociology, and Data Science for Social Research. [5]
