One Stone is a nonprofit organization that promotes student voice and student leadership based in Boise, Idaho. Their stated mission is "Making students better leaders and the world a better place." [1] They use the design thinking approach, pioneered at Stanford's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, throughout their organization.

History

Teresa and Joel Poppen founded One Stone in 2008. [2] In 2015, One Stone received part of a $24.5 million dollar grant from the J.A. & Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation. [3] The following year, One Stone received an additional $2.1 million of a $32 million total grant from the foundation. [4] [5]

Overview

Two-thirds of One Stone's board of directors are students as mandated by the organization's bylaws. [6]

Two Birds

Two Birds is a student-led and operated creative design and marketing agency. Past clients include Albertsons, [7] The Cabin, HQPBL, WASHTO, and various internal One Stone projects. Students in the Two Birds program work with clients using the design thinking process to develop logos, marketing strategies, websites, and other ventures. [8] In 2018, Two Birds acquired Jason Sievers as Creative Director from advertising agency DaviesMoore. [9]

Project Good

Project Good is a community service program at One Stone that uses the design thinking process.

Hatch

Hatch is a business incubator for student developed businesses.

Lab51

One Stone Lab51 is an independent school consisting of roughly 125 students in the four-year program as of the fall of 2019. [10] The first class started in the fall of 2016 and graduated in 2019. [11] For its first six years, the school charged no tuition. With the Albertson grant sunsetting, the school decided to begin charging tuition on a sliding scale based on each family’s ability to pay. [12] The program is different from traditional school, as it has no grades, opting for a portfolio and narrative transcript evaluation instead. [13] Instead of teachers, the school has coaches, which support student-driven learning. In the spring of 2019, One Stone had 17 coaches, with 7 master's degrees and 4 doctoral degrees between them. [14]

During the college application process in Spring 2023, One Stone students were accepted into 83.8% of colleges applied to. Across the 37 students of the class of 2023, graduates earned $2 million in projected four-year merit scholarships. [15]

In the media

In 2019, One Stone was featured in a documentary by filmmaker Jon Long, called Rise: Voice of a New Generation. [16] Long has produced documentaries for Disney, PBS, and National Geographic. [17]

The College of Idaho is a private liberal arts college in Caldwell, Idaho. Founded in 1891, it is the state's oldest private liberal arts college and has an enrollment of over 1,000 students. The college's alumni include eight Rhodes Scholars, three governors, four professional football players, and one professional baseball player. Its PEAK Curriculum allows students to study in four knowledge areas - humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and a professional field - and earn a major and three minors in four years.

Joseph Albert Albertson was an American businessman who founded the Albertsons chain of grocery stores in the United States.

Caldwell High School four-year public secondary school in Caldwell, Idaho, the only traditional high school in the Caldwell School District #132. The building is on South Indiana Avenue near the corner of Ustick Road, across from the local YMCA. The school colors are blue, white, and gold and the mascot is a cougar.

The University of Idaho College of Law is the law school of the University of Idaho. Its main location is in Moscow, and a second campus is in the state capital of Boise. As of the entering class of 2017–18, students may take all three years of instruction at either location. The UI College of Law was established in 1909, has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1914, and has been accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) since 1925. In the 2023 rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked Idaho Law at #142 of ABA-accredited law schools in its annual law school rankings.

Kathryn McCurry Albertson was the wife of the founder of the Albertsons chain of grocery stores and a notable philanthropist.

The McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) is a year-round learning center that serves over 2500 Idaho K-12 students annually in residential and outreach settings. Field instructors for outdoor science programs are University of Idaho College of Natural Resources graduate students completing a certificate and master's degree in environmental education. The McCall Outdoor Science School also offers programs open to the public including Field Seminars, Faculty Lectures, and Community Partnerships. MOSS is Idaho's only residential outdoor science school.

Boiseko Ikastola is a language immersion preschool located in Boise, Idaho, United States. It is one of the few schools outside the Basque country to teach the Basque language.

Cumer Scott Green is an American businessman and academic administrator serving as the 19th president of the University of Idaho in Moscow. Green took office in July 2019, and has been characterized as a "non-traditional" choice for the role, as he has neither a doctorate nor a background in higher education.
