Operation Albatros

Operation Albatros was a major narcotics operation carried out by the Turkish Coast Guard in coordination with the Turkish Navy in international waters off the coast of Libya against a Bolivian flagged ship lasting from 3 January to 7 January 2016. The operation lead to the arrest of all ten Syrian crew members and the seizure of over 13.6 tons of marijuana in powdered form. The operation was the first such in international waters in over 22 years since the Lucky-S incident and Kısmetim-1 incident. [1] The initial raid was carried out on 6 January by Turkish coast guard special operations teams from boat and helicopter and lasted another day whilst a complete search of the ship upon arrest of the crew was being conducted. [2] [3] According to the ministry, the Turkish Security Directorate’s anti-narcotics unit received information on the Bolivian-flagged ship and contacted the Turkish Coast Guard. The Turkish Coast Guard determined the location of the ship on Jan. 3 and began pursuit with an aircraft and a ship. The operation was authorized by Turkey’s Foreign Ministry in cooperation with the Bolivian government and in line with UN treaties on drugs trafficking. [4] [5] According to the Turkish Coast Guard most of the illicit drugs were heading to Europe for distribution and the ship was heading from the Syrian port city of Tartus to Tobruk, Libya. [6] [7]

Operation Claw was a cross-border military operation by the Turkish Armed Forces into Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan Region against the Kurdistan Workers' Party. Turkish troops fired artillery shells and launched air attacks in the morning of 28 May 2019, followed by a border crossing by the Turkish Army and Gendarmerie Special Public Security Command. On 30 May 2019, the first Turkish losses were recorded: a specialist sergeant and a second lieutenant were killed in action. On 13th July, Turkey launched the next part of the counter-terror operation(Operation Claw-2 )in N.Iraq On 24 August, Operation Claw 3 was launched in northern Iraq. As result the Turkish Army set up three new bases deep in Hakurk region and established a dozen observation points. In June 2020, the Turkish military officially announced the start of Operation Claw-Eagle in Iraq.

The Maritime Search and Security Operations Team is the special forces command of the Turkish Coast Guard. Formerly name DAGOT was abolished and later became SÖH Maritime Search and Security Operations Team or also called Coast Guard Special Operations Team as well. They ensure security in Turkey's territorial waters, coasts and inland waters and prevent crime. They are in charge of providing security in search and rescue operations in the open seas and organizing drug and terrorist operations in line with the orders given. They receive training on SCUBA diving, parachuting, combat swimming, ship capture and confiscation, and special operations. In 2016, Turkish Coast Guard units carried out operations in international waters for the first time with 2 corvettes and 1 Coast Guard aircraft. The name of the operation was Operation Albatross during which 13.6 tons of cannabis were seized and 9 Syrian nationals were caught on a Bolivia-flagged ship named Jaudi, which was sailing from the west of the island of Cyprus to the Libyan coast. 1 Coast Guard Special Operations team participated in the operation.
