Oumou Sy (born 1952 in Podor, Senegal) is a Senegalese fashion designer frequently referred to as "Senegal's Queen of Couture". [1] [2] She designed the wardrobe for the Senegalese singers Baaba Maal and Youssou N'Dour, [2] and has won various awards at international film festivals for her costume designs. [2]

In 1998 Sy was one of the three African fashion designers to win the Principal Prince Claus Award. [3] [4]

From April 2012 to September 2013, he was Senegal's Minister of Tourism.

Podor is the northernmost town in Senegal, lying on Morfil Island between the Sénégal River and Doué River on the border with Mauritania. It was the location of the ancient state Takrur. It is home to a ruined French colonial fort, built in 1854 as a centre for gold trading, and is the birthplace of fashion designer Oumou Sy, as well as musicians Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck.

Didier Awadi is a Senegalese rapper and a significant figure in Francophone West African hip hop. As a founding member of Positive Black Soul (PBS) with Duggy Tee, Awadi toured around the world contributing to the international popularity of Hip Hop Galsen. Awadi works as a solo artist, accompanied by his crew PBS Radikal. He participates in the Senegalese music industry through his label, recording studio, and rehearsal space, Studio Sankara. Awadi offers a conscious and revolutionary style of music strengthened by articulated and rooted messages. His motivation and inspiration is grounded in the Burkinabé revolutionary Thomas Sankara's phrase: "Let's dare to invent our future!"

Bazin stems from the Italian word "bambagia" meaning cotton wadding. It is a cotton damask or brocade fabric imported in West African countries from Europe or Asia. In Senegal, bazin fabric was introduced with the arrival of the French and was used to make a Boubou, a long loose traditional outerwear, worn by men and women mostly in West Africa and the West African Diaspora.
