Out of the Cold

Out of the Cold is a volunteer driven program run in many Canadian cities during the cold winter months serving homeless and poor community members. While initially a Catholic program started by Sister Susan Moran at St. Michael's College School, [1] [2] [3] [4] it has grown into a multi-faith initiative, with community organizations such as churches, synagogues and mosques in a city taking turns providing food, hospitality and medical services. [1] The program runs from about mid November to early April.

Homelessness in Canada has grown in size and complexity by 1997. While historically known as a crisis only of urban centres such as Montreal, Laval, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Toronto the increasing incidence of homelessness in the suburbs is necessitating new services and resources.

Poverty in Canada

Poverty in Canada remains prevalent within some segments of society and according to a 2008 report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the rate of poverty in Canada, is among the highest of the OECD member nations, the world's wealthiest industrialized nations. There is no official government definition and therefore, measure, for poverty in Canada. However, Dennis Raphael, author of Poverty in Canada: Implications for Health and Quality of Life reported that the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and Canadian poverty researchers find that relative poverty is the "most useful measure for ascertaining poverty rates in wealthy developed nations such as Canada." In its report released the Conference Board.

St. Michaels College School

St. Michael's College School is a private, all-boys Roman Catholic day school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Administered by the Basilian Fathers, it is the largest school of its kind in Canada, with an enrollment of approximately 1,050 students from grades seven to twelve. It is well known for its high standard of athletics and academics, notably its ice hockey and football programs. The hockey program has graduated numerous future National Hockey League ice hockey players. St. Michael's is the brother school of Holy Name of Mary College School, an independent, Catholic all-girls school in Mississauga. The school was part of the Metropolitan Separate School Board from 1967 to 1985, but has subsequently operated within the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario.

Those receiving the services are called guests. Guests are treated with care, respect and without judgment. Unlike other shelter programs, Out of the Cold does not generally require detailed registration. [5]

Toronto Paramedic Services

The City of Toronto Paramedic Services, formerly known as Toronto EMS, is the statutory emergency medical services provider for the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The service is operated directly as a branch of the municipal government as an independent, third-service option provider, which means that the service is funded by the municipal tax base, and operates in much the same manner as any other municipal division, such as the police or fire department, or in some cases like a public utility, but retains its complete independence from all other divisions. While under municipal government control, it is required to comply with legislation and licensing standards provided by the Ontario provincial government. It is not the only service provider in its area; private-for-profit medical transport services also provide routine, non-emergency transports and coverage for special events, but the statutory EMS system is the only provider permitted to service emergency calls.

St. Josephs Health Centre Hospital in Ontario, Canada

St. Joseph's Health Centre is a large Catholic teaching hospital in western Toronto, Ontario. It is located west of downtown, along the Lake Ontario shore at the intersection of The Queensway and Sunnyside Avenue, just west of Roncesvalles Avenue. It was founded in 1921 by the Sisters of St. Joseph order on the site of an orphanage. The same order also founded St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto in 1892.

NORTH Network

NORTH Network was a telehealth organization serving communities in Northern and Central Ontario. NORTH's head office was located in Toronto and its clinical headquarters in Timmins. NORTH was a program of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and received funding from the provincial government's Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

Seaton House is the largest homeless shelter in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 339 George Street in the Garden District neighbourhood. The facility provides temporary lodging, food, clothing, medical care, for single men and also attempts to provide tools for enabling them to establish their independence. The shelter houses up to 700 men though, in the past, it has exceeded capacity and housed as many as 900 men. It is expected to close in 2020.

The Lourdes Health System consists of two hospitals, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey and Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro, New Jersey. Administrative offices are located at its Camden facility. The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, New York founded the health system in 1950 and is a member of Trinity Health.

Covenant House Toronto is a nonprofit organization that serves, at-risk, homeless and trafficked youth between 16 and 24. It is based in Toronto, Ontario and is one of the many Covenant House locations based in North America. The Toronto location is the largest agency of its kind in Canada, with 80 per cent of their annual funding coming from donors. The house serves as many as 300 youth a day regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identitity, or the circumstances that have brought them to their doors. Covenant House also offers services such as education, after-care, counselling, health care, employment assistance and job training. The organization has also offered hope and care to more than 95,000 young people since its start in 1982.
