History

Outpost24 was founded in 2001 by a group of ethical hackers and software developers with its headquarters based in Karlskrona, Sweden. [3] Initially focused on penetration testing and security consulting, the company later transitioned to cloud-based security software with the launch of its first managed scanning solution in 2007. [3]

In 2012, Outpost24 introduced its Attack Surface Management (ASM) platform, marking a shift toward automated vulnerability assessment and monitoring. [4]

In 2020, Outpost24 secured a funding round worth SEK 200m (€19m) led by asset manager Swedbank Rohur and Nordic equity investment firm Alcur Fonder, with the goal of expanding its offering and services worldwide. [5]

Acquisitions and partnerships

In January 2018, Outpost24 acquired SecludIT, a French startup specializing in cloud infrastructure security. [6] In October 2019, it purchased Pwnie Express, a firm known for detecting threats in wireless, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi devices. [7]

In July 2021, the company acquired Blueliv, integrating dark web and open-source threat intelligence into its offerings. [8] Within the same year, it added password management and multi-factor authentication capabilities through the acquisition of Specops Software. [9]

In July 2022, Vitruvian Partners, a private equity firm made a majority investment in Outpost24. [3] In June 2023, Outpost24 also acquired Sweepatic, an external attack surface management provider. [10]

Business model

Outpost24 operates on a subscription-based model, providing organizations with continuous cybersecurity assessment and monitoring services through its cloud platform. [11] The company’s portfolio includes external attack surface management, vulnerability assessment, application security testing, and on-demand penetration testing. [12] [13]

Outpost24’s offerings aim to help organizations identify, analyze, and mitigate risks associated with exposed assets and user identities. [14] The company also conducts independent cybersecurity research and collaborates with the wider security community on vulnerability disclosures and threat intelligence. [14]

Technology and research

Outpost24’s platform integrates multiple security solutions including Attack Surface Management (ASM), Identity and Access Management (IAM), and Digital Risk Protection (DRP). [14] Its early contributions to cybersecurity research include Sockstress, a proof-of-concept attack demonstrating a TCP/IP vulnerability in 2008, and Unicornscan, an open-source TCP scanner used for network reconnaissance and analysis. [15]

The company has also published research on cybercriminal operations and password vulnerabilities through its internal research teams and acquired subsidiary, including, Specops Software. [8]
