Ozark Festival Orchestra

The Ozark Festival Orchestra is an independent, self-sustaining, established orchestra residing in a small city in the Ozarks --- Monett, Missouri, population 7,396. [1] The ensemble of 40 members commissions new works, features regional and national guest soloists, and hosts a Young Artists competition annually. [2] It is uncommon for an American city of this size to host an orchestra, although many small American towns do have a community band.

The OFO has a five-concert season starting in October and ending in April or May.

The OFO completed its 38th season in the spring of 2018; [3] this was the 4th season for the current conductor/musical director, Todd Borgmann. Former musical directors include Ken Meisinger, [4] Jordan Tang [5] and David Goza. [6]

It is estimated that anywhere from 160,000 to 350,000 were in attendance at the three day festival. The event was marked by mismanagement as the facilities were not equipped for the number of attendees.

The Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) is the oldest youth orchestra in the United States, established in 1924 as the Portland Junior Symphony (PJS). Now based in Portland, Oregon, the orchestra's origin dates back to 1910, when music teacher Mary V. Dodge began playing music for local children in Burns, Oregon. Dodge purchased instruments for the children and organized the orchestra, which would become known as the Sagebrush Symphony Orchestra. After touring the state, including a performance at the Oregon State Fair in Salem, the orchestra disbanded in 1918 when Dodge moved to Portland. There, Dodge opened a violin school and became music director of the Irvington School Orchestra.

The Flint Institute of Music, also called the FIM, is located in the Flint Cultural Center in Flint, Michigan. It is ranked as the 8th largest community music school in the United States. The FIM is made up of The Flint Symphony Orchestra, Flint School of Performing Arts and Flint Repertory Theatre; as well as the Whiting Auditorium and Capitol Theatre. The Flint Institute of Music offers lessons, classes, ensembles, and camps for all levels for ages 3 years to adults. The Chicago Philharmonic is an American orchestra based in Chicago, Illinois, governed by the Chicago Philharmonic Society. The miniature one-act opera received its live stage premiere by Opera Carolina in November 2016 as part of National Opera Week.
