P. G. Karuthiruman was an Indian politician and a who served as the fourth and last Opposition Leader of Madras State and first Opposition Leader of Tamil Nadu . He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as an Indian National Congress candidate from Nambiyur constituency in 1952,and then Gobichettipalayam constituency in 1957 election and from Sathyamangalam constituency in 1967 election. [1] [2] who served as the fourth and last Opposition Leader OF Madras State from 1967 until 1971 He was born in a small village near Gobichettipalayam called Nanjai Puliyambatti.[ citation needed ] He was a true Gandhian by principle and practice. He stood for the people and constituency that he represented and had clear vision and broad outlook for the state and country as well. A very simple and easily approachable person he was and he had the confidence of great leaders like Shri. K. Kamaraj the then CM of Tamil Nadu and Bharat Ratna Shri C. Subramaniam. He widely traveled across the globe and brought many accolades to the country. Apart from being a political leader he was also a great scholar in Tamil literature especially in the great epic Kamba Ramayanam. He contributed many articles books and speeches on this subject.

Kalyanasundaram Anbazhagan was an Indian politician. He was a long-standing leader of the Dravidian movement and was the General Secretary of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party (DMK) for nine terms. He has held several cabinet ministerial portfolios in the Tamil Nadu government under M. Karunanidhi including Finance,Education and Health and Social Welfare. He was elected as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on nine occasions. He was earlier elected to the Lok Sabha the lower house of India's Parliament from Tiruchengode and was also a member of the Madras Legislative Council. He served as the opposition leader of Tamil Nadu assembly from 2001 to 2006. He was popularly referred to as Perasiriyar (Professor) as he was a lecturer in Tamil in Pachaiyappa's College before resigning to contest elections in 1957.
P. Kakkan or fondly known as Kakkan,was an Indian politician and freedom fighter who served as a member of the Constituent Assembly of India,Member of Parliament,President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and in various ministerial posts in Congress governments in the erstwhile Madras state between 1957 and 1967.
The fourth legislative assembly election of Madras State was held in February 1967. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led coalition under the leadership of C.N. Annadurai won the election defeating the Indian National Congress (Congress). Anti-Hindi agitations,the rising prices of essential commodities,and a shortage of rice were the dominant issues. K. Kamaraj's resignation as the Chief Minister in 1963,to concentrate on party affairs,along with persistent rumors of corruption had weakened the incumbent Congress Government. This was the second time after Communist Party of India winning Kerala assembly elections in 1957,for a non-Congress party to gain the majority in a state in India,and the last time that Congress held power in Tamil Nadu. It was the first time a party or pre-election alliance formed a non-Congress government with an absolute majority. It marked the beginning of Dravidian dominance in the politics of Tamil Nadu. Annadurai,who became the first non-Congress chief minister of post-independence Tamil Nadu,died in office in 1969 and V.R. Nedunchezhiyan took over as acting chief minister.
Shanmugha Rajeswara Sethupathi or Naganatha Sethupathi was an Indian politician of the Justice Party and later,the Indian National Congress and head of the zamindari of Ramnad or Ramnad kingdom from 1929 to 1967. He was a member of the Madras Legislative Assembly from 1951 to 1967 and served as a minister in C. Rajagopalachari and K. Kamaraj's cabinets. He was popular as the main political opponent of U. Si. Balasubramania Athithan 27 September 1905 –24 May 1981),popularly called as "Adithanar",was an Indian lawyer,politician,minister and founder of the Tamil daily newspaper Dina Thanthi. He was the founder of the We Tamils party. He served as a member of the Madras Legislative Council for two terms and as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for four terms. He was the Speaker of the Assembly during 1967–68 and Tamil Nadu's minister for Cooperation in the M. Karunanidhi cabinets of 1969 and 1971. In his memory,two Tamil literary awards were created and are awarded annually by his son,Sivanthi Adithanar.
The first legislative assembly Election to the Madras state based on universal adult suffrage was held in 27 March 1952. This was the first election held in Madras state after the Indian Independence. This election was officially known as the 1951 Madras State Election,even though through delays,actual voting didn't take place until early 1952.
The second legislative assembly election to the Madras state was held on 31 March 1957. This was the first election held after the linguistic reorganisation of Madras State in 1956. Indian National Congress and its leader,K. Kamaraj won the election and defeated their rival,Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In 1954,due to the resignation of C. Rajagopalachari,for his controversial Kula Kalvi Thittam,the leadership of Congress was contested between K. Kamaraj,and C. Subramaniam. Eventually,K. Kamaraj,won the support of the party,was elected leader and chief minister of Madras State in 1954. In a surprise move,he appointed both M. Bhaktavatsalam and C. Subramaniam,to his cabinet,allowing great unity amongst the Congress that ruled the state of Madras,for the next decade. This election saw future DMK leaders M. Karunanidhi and K. Anbazhagan win their first MLA seats in the legislative assembly.
A. Nesamony,sometimes known as Marshal Nesamony,was a political leader from Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu,India. He was the second son of Kesavan Appavu Nadar,born on 12 June 1895 at Nesarpuram,Palliyadi in Vilavancode Taluk,Kanyakumari district.
