The Paardenmarkt bank is a sandbank in the North Sea some 300 to 1500 meters from the Belgian coast near Knokke-Heist and close to the port of Zeebrugge.

Etymology

The oldest mention of the Paardenmarkt occurs in 1411. It was a market for horses on the former island of Wulpen. In 1377, a storm flood destroyed most of the island and in the All Saints Flood of 1570 the rest disappeared under the waves. Since the beginning of the 17th century on many charts the name Paardenmarkt has been used to indicate the shallows. [1]

Munition dump

After the First World War, from November 1919 to May 1920 some 35,000 tons of ammunition- of which some 10,000 tons were mostly German chemical ammunition (mustard gas)- was dumped by the Belgian authorities at the bank. The existence of the dump was forgotten until it was rediscovered in 1971. The dump is currently covered by some two to four meters of sand. [2] [3]

In 2013 after searching the government archives, scientists disputed the number as an underassessment and claimed that probably all 35,000 tons of the dumped munitions are chemical munitions, because after the war conventional munitions were usually disposed of by exploding them under controlled circumstances. However, at the time this was considered to be too risky for chemical weapons. Due to the high financial cost and for safety reasons the Belgian government has decided not to clear the area and practices a "don't touch" policy. The site is however marked with buoys and is constantly monitored, and is a prohibited area for fishery activity and for anchoring. [4] [5]

Operation CHASE was a United States Department of Defense program for the disposal of unwanted munitions at sea from May 1964 until the early 1970s. Munitions were loaded onto ships to be scuttled once they were at least 250 miles offshore. While most of the sinkings involved conventional weapons, four of them involved chemical weapons. The disposal site for the chemical weapons was a three-mile (5 km) area of the Atlantic Ocean between the coast of the U.S. state of Florida and the Bahamas. Other weapons were disposed of in various locations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The CHASE program was preceded by the United States Army disposal of 8,000 short tons of mustard and lewisite chemical warfare gas aboard the scuttled SS William C. Ralston in April 1958. These ships were sunk by having Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams open seacocks on the ship after they arrived at the disposal site. The typical Liberty ship sank about three hours after the seacocks were opened.

The manhunt for Jürgen Conings began on 18 May 2021, after the discovery that Conings, a Belgian soldier under suspicion of far-right extremism, had taken several weapons from military barracks in Leopoldsburg the previous day and farewell letters were found containing violent threats directed at the Belgian government and virologists. On 20 June 2021, Belgian media reported that a body had been found in the Dilserbos forest, which was later confirmed by the Federal Prosecutor's Office to be the body of Jürgen Conings. One day later, the Federal Prosecutor's Office confirmed that Conings died of suicide by gunshot, which was disputed by his family. A second autopsy was denied and he was cremated a few days later.
