Pablo Artal (born June 12, 1961, in Zaragoza) is a Spanish physicist and full professor specialized in optics at the University of Murcia, as well as in the development and application of new techniques in human vision research. He is the founder and director of the Optics Lab at Murcia University [1] and received the Spanish National Research award "Juan de la Cierva" and the Rey Jaime I Award for New Technologies in 2015. [2] [3] His main research topics are the optics of the eye and the retina and the development of optical and electronic imaging techniques in the field of biomedicine, ophtalmology and vision. [4] He has contributed to the advance of methods for the study of the optics of the eye and contributed to the understanding of the factors that limit the resolution of the human vision. Moreover, his discoveries and ideas have been applied to instruments and devices used in the clinical practice of ophthalmology.

Biography

After earning a MSc degree in physics from the University of Zaragoza, he joined the Institute of Optics of the Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) located in Madrid as a PhD student in 1984. His PhD supervisor was Javier Santamaria. After his doctorate he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge, UK and the Institut d'Optique, Orsay (France).

Back to Spain, he became a permanent researcher at the Institute of Optics (CSIC). Since 1994 he has been the first Full Professor of Optics at the University of Murcia, and was the funder of the Optics Laboratory. [3] [5] He is also an elected fellow member of the Optical Society of America (OSA), fellow of the Association for research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the European Optical Society (EOS). He is a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia and the Academy of Medicine and a distinguished visiting professor at the Central South University in Changsha (China). [6]

He was awarded with the Edwin H. Land Medal by the OSA and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), "For scientific contributions to the advancement of diagnostic and correction alternatives in visual optics" (2013). [7] The European Research Council granted Artal with an Advanced Research grant in 2014 with a total budget of 2.5 million euros for the creation of optoelectronic glasses. [8] He received the 'Rey Jaime I' Award for New Technologies in 2015. The mention states that he hold more than 20 international patents and was founder of five companies in the field of optics... [which] has helped to improve the quality of life of people around the world." In May 2016, he announced that he dedicated 20,000 of the 100,000 euros obtained from the Rey Jaime I to support ten scholarships for the most talented undergraduate students enrolled in the science degrees at the University of Murcia. [9] [10] Artal won the Juan de la Cierva Spanish National Research Award in 2018 [11] and the Edgar D. Tillyer award of the OSA for “the pioneering use of optics and photonics technologies to unravel the human visual system and to improve eye diagnostics and correction”. [12] He was the recipient of the Gold Medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics.

Artal is co-inventor of 35 patents in the Optics and Ophtalmology fields [13] and the co-founder of two spin-off companies (Voptica SL & Visiometrics SL) focused on optical solutions[ buzzword ] and diagnostic instruments. [14] According to Google Scholar, he has published more than 400 scientific studies with more than 25200 citations and with a h-index of 85. [15] He has participated in more than 300 invited presentations in international meetings and approximately 300 seminars in scientific institutions across the world. [16] He edited the two-volume “Handbook of Visual Optics” in 2017. [17]

Some of his inventions are already present in the clinical practice: the adaptive optics visual simulator (VAO) http://voptica.com and a new type of intraocular lenses with inverted meniscus shape that improves the quality of vision in the periphery (ArtIOLs). [18]

Bandrés. His research work is done with the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education’s Optics Center, of which he is the director. This work has been recognized with membership in Mexican Academy of Sciences and Level III membership in the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores.

Ken Nakayama is an American psychologist. Prior to retirement he was the Edgar Pierce Professor of Psychology at Harvard University. He is now an emeritus professor at Harvard.

Michal Lipson is an American physicist known for her work on silicon photonics. A member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2019, Lipson was named a 2010 MacArthur Fellow for contributions to silicon photonics especially towards enabling GHz silicon active devices. Until 2014, she was the Given Foundation Professor of Engineering at Cornell University in the school of electrical and computer engineering and a member of the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience at Cornell. She is now the Eugene Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. In 2009 she co-founded the company PicoLuz, which develops and commercializes silicon nanophotonics technologies. In 2019, she co-founded Voyant Photonics, which develops next generation lidar technology based on silicon photonics. In 2020 Lipson was elected the 2021 vice president of Optica, and serves as the Optica president in 2023.

Marie Gertrude Rand Ferree was an American research scientist who is known for her extensive body of work about color perception. Her work included "mapping the retina for its perceptional abilities", "developing new instruments and lamps for ophthalmologists", and "detection and measurement of color blindness". Rand, with LeGrand H. Hardy and M. Catherine Rittler, developed the HRR pseudoisochromatic color test.

Edgar Derry Tillyer was an astronomer, computer and lens designer who was the director of research at the American Optical Company. The Optical Society established an award for distinction in the field of vision which is named in his honor, as he was the first award winner in 1954.

The Edwin H. Land Medal is jointly presented by The Optical Society and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T). The Land Medal was established in 1992 to honor the noted scientist and entrepreneur Edwin H. Land, who is noted for his invention of instant photography, for founding the Polaroid Corporation, and for developing the theory of Retinex, amongst many other accomplishments. It is funded by the Polaroid Foundation, the Polaroid Retirees Association and by individual contributors Manfred Heiting, Theodore Voss and John J. McCann. The medal honors individuals who, using the science of optics, "have demonstrated pioneering entrepreneurial activity that has had a major impact on the public."

Susana Marcos Celestino is a Spanish physicist specialising in human vision and applied optics. She was the Director of Optica in 2012.

The Rey Jaime I Awards are Spanish awards given annually to recognize achievements in research and entrepreneurship. Each award includes 100,000 euros and a gold medal as well as a diploma. Awards are given for high-quality work done in Spain, by candidates who live in Spain or have done most of their research work in Spain.

Glenn Ansel Fry was an American scientist who studied physiological optics and optometry.

Brian Vohnsen is an Associate Professor of Physics at UCD in Dublin, Ireland specializing in optics. He is head of the Advanced Optical Imaging Group which he founded in 2008. He has received recognition for his ability to connect the field of biomedical optics and nano-optics. In 2021 he became a fellow of Optica for significant contributions to vision science, including photoreceptor optics and high resolution retinal imaging.

Andrea Blanco-Redondo is a Spanish photonics engineer and physicist who works at the University of Central Florida as Florida Photonics Center of Excellence (FPCE) Endowed Professor in the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL). She is known for her discovery of optical quartic solitons; her research interests also include topological photonics, quantum optics, nanophotonics, photonic crystals, and slow light.
