Padmini Prakash is an Indian news anchor, actress and transgender rights activist. She became the first openly trans person to work as a news anchor in India when she joined the Tamil channel Lotus News Channel on 15 August 2014. [1] [2]
Padmini was born into a conservative Tamil family in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. [3] Padmini was disowned by her family who rejected her gender identity, at the age of 13. [4] She left her home at age 16, [5] and has not been in contact with her family since then. [1] [3] After leaving home, she was supported by her cousin Prakash. [5] She completed her school education and applied for a distance-learning correspondence course for a Bachelor's degree in Commerce, which she was forced to drop out of after her second year due to financial setbacks as well discrimination and bullying for her gender identity. Padmini transitioned in 2004, and married her husband Nagraj Prakash in the same year. [3] Nagraj Prakash is her cousin, [5] whose family had taken her in when she was forced to leave her family home. The couple have adopted a son Jaya together. [4] She was encouraged by her husband, a goldsmith, to complete her education. He wanted her to become an IAS officer, but could not fulfil that dream due to their financial setbacks. [7]
On 15 August 2014, India's Independence Day, Padmini hosted the 7 pm news bulletin on the Tamil channel Lotus News Channel, becoming the first Indian trans woman to be a television news anchor. [8] The news channel started looking for transgender news anchors after the landmark NALSA judgment which gave transgender people the right to self-identify as male, female or third gender, and granted many more recognitions and protections for the transgender community in India. She was given two months training by Lotus News of voice modulation. [1]
Padmini is also a classically trained dancer who has previously taught Bharatnatyam. She has also acted in Tamil soap operas[ citation needed ] and participated in transgender beauty pageants. She was crowned Miss Transgender India in 2009 and Miss Transgender Tamil Nadu in 2007. [4] [9]
Padmini Prakash was commended by Rose Venkatesan, who was India's first transgender talk show hostess, in Ippadikku Rose on Star Vijay TV. [4] [2] In fact, Rose was the one who recommended Padmini for the job at Lotus News. [1]
In the Indian subcontinent, hijra are transgender, intersex, or eunuch people who live in communities that follow a kinship system known as guru-chela system. They are also known as aravani, aruvani, and jogappa. The term used in Pakistan is khawaja sira, the equivalent of transgender in the Urdu language.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in Tamil Nadu are the most progressive among all states of India. Tamil Nadu was the first state in India to introduce a transgender welfare policy, wherein transgender individuals can access free gender affirmation surgery in government hospitals and various other benefits and rights. The state was also the first to ban forced sex-selective surgeries on intersex infants, and also the first state to include an amendment in its state police guidelines that expects officers to abstain from harassing the LGBTQIA+ community and its members. The state also became the first to ban conversion therapy as well as the first to introduce LGBTQIA+ issues in school curricula.

Gopi Shankar Madurai is an Indian equal rights and Indigenous rights activist. Shankar was one of the youngest, and the first openly intersex and genderqueer statutory authority and one of the candidates to contest in 2016 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. Shankar is also the founder of Srishti Madurai Student Volunteer Collective. Shankar's work inspired the Madras High Court to direct the Government of Tamil Nadu to order a ban on forced sex-selective surgeries on intersex infants. In December 2017, Shankar was elected to the executive board of ILGA Asia. In August 2020, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment appointed Shankar as the South Regional representative in the National Council for Transgender Persons.
