Pale Rider is the debut full-length album from Western Australian hip hop artist, Drapht. It was released in October 2003 through Australian Hip Hop label, Syllabolix Records. The album features contributions by MC Layla, Dazastah, Optamus and Hunter. [1] [2] Tracks were produced by Dazastah, Optamus or Fdel. [2] Matt Unicomb in 3D World describes the album as being "one of Western Australia's defining hip hop achievements." [3]

Drapht Australian hip hop musician

Paul Reid, formerly Paul Gary James Ridge,, better known by the stage name Drapht, is an Australian hip hop artist from Perth. Drapht is a member of the Syllabolix (SBX) crew, a collective that includes fellow Perth-based hip hop artists such as Downsyde.

Layla Rose Hanbury, known mononymously as Layla, is an Australian hip hop singer-songwriter and MC from Perth. In January 2005 she released her debut solo album, Heretik, on Obese Records. She is a member of Syllabolix (SBX) Crew, with other MCs including her husband, Dazastah. The couple also perform as Layla and Dazastah. During September and October 2011 the duo were a support act for another SBX artist, Drapht, on his Australia-wide Party Party Party Tour.

Dazastah is one of the MCs of the Perth-based hip-hop group Downsyde.

Overview

The ninth track on the album, "Weather Man," features samples from Eminem's "Square Dance." [4] In a 2003 interview Drapht states that the title of the album is based on the Clint Eastwood movie of the same name and 'all my life being told that I have real pale skin'. [5] The artwork is by Perth graffiti artist, Dash (who also produced the artwork for Brothers Grimm and The Life of Riley ). [6] It received national airplay on Triple J radio station. [7]

Clint Eastwood American actor and film director

Clinton Eastwood Jr. is an American actor, filmmaker, musician, and politician. After achieving success in the Western TV series Rawhide, he rose to international fame with his role as the Man with No Name in Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy of spaghetti Westerns during the 1960s and as antihero cop Harry Callahan in the five Dirty Harry films throughout the 1970s and 1980s. These roles, among others, have made Eastwood an enduring cultural icon of masculinity.

Pale Rider is a 1985 American western film produced and directed by Clint Eastwood, who also stars in the lead role. The title is a reference to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as the rider of a pale horse is Death. The film, which took in nearly $41 million at the box office, became the highest grossing Western of the 1980s.

In August 2008 Drapht told Ted Schlechte of Drum Media Perth that "I was fortunate to be hanging out with the Downsyde boys and the rest of SBX who were hugely influential. Essentially I got into music because it really amazed me how Daz [Dazastah] tackled his writing style with his witty punch-lines. Aggression was one thing I wanted to rid myself of though, at that time in my life it was my venting process. An angry teen mad at society, and myself. But we live to grow through that." [2] Daniel Fosky of Scene described how the artist had developed "from the angst driven young Perth rapper leaking out" of Pale Rider. [8] Drapht describes that at the time of writing the album he was like "all other teens"..."an angry, ignorant handful with an overload of self-importance and shutoff to the rest of the world." [9] In another interview he has also stated that at that time he was "100% closed minded" and "just listened to hip-hop." [10]

A review of the album on Ozhiphop.com states "Drapht delivers verses that are well constructed and delivered on point every time. Packed full of creative wordplay, punches and a flow that is very unique and works well over the beats provided. Tracks such as "Weather Man" provide a good example of Drapht's ability to switch up and address the scenes and worlds issues, from Selwyn to the final verse on the war." and ""Hang 'em High" is an explosive lead off track that allows Drapht to show us exactly what he plans to do, rip strong verses over impressive production. Drapht has a flow that gets your head nodding as much as the beat provided by Fdel does." [11]

Selwyn (singer) Australian singer

Selwyn is an R&B singer from Perth, Western Australia. He was a contestant on the Australian reality series Popstars 2, but did not make it through to the final group lineup. He was re-discovered while working at a shopping centre as a trolley boy. Producer Audius Mtawarira overheard him singing and offered to produce him.

Robert Alan Hunter, better known as Hunter or Huntz, was an Australian rapper and hip hop artist. He was a founder of Perth's hip hop scene in the 1990s and a member of the MC collective Syllabolix (SBX) Crew. During his career, he released four albums: Done DL (2002), Going Back to Yokine (2006), Monster House (2010) and Fear and Loathing (2011).

Scott Griffiths, better known by the stage name Optamus, is one of the MCs of the Perth-based Australian hip-hop group Downsyde and member of WA's Syllabolix Crew. Optamus is also the name of Griffiths' solo project.

Finatik N Zac

FnZ are an Australian duo consisting of Michael "Finatik" Mulé and Isaac "Zac" Deboni. One of 2015's BMI Urban/R&B top producer award winners.

The Funkoars are an Australian hip hop act from Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. The group is part of the Certified Wise crew of hip hop artists from South Australia, who also collaborated on various recordings. Funkoars are signed to the Golden Era Records label.

Who Am I is the second full-length album from Western Australian hip hop artist, Drapht. It was released in June 2005 through Australian Hip Hop label, Obese Records. It was released in both in a CD and a limited 2 LP vinyl format. The album features contributions by MC Layla, Dazastah (Downsyde) and Pressure. Two songs from the album, "Drink Drank Drunk" and "The Music", received airplay on community radio stations and national youth broadcaster, Triple J, and featured on national music video show, rage. "The Music" samples Living Jazz's version of "Walk On By" and was selected by Triple J as a featured track for Ausmusic month in 2005. The album has subsequently been included in the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) as part of The Art of Sound, a collaborative project between the NFSA and selected regional art galleries, which examines the intersections between sound and the visual arts.

Alasdair Murray, better known by his stage name Illy, is a recording artist from Ormond in Melbourne, Australia. Before his solo career, Illy was a member of Crooked Eye, but opted to leave the group. He released his first solo album in 2009, entitled Long Story Short, and has released four more albums. His second The Chase, was nominated for an ARIA award while his third Bring It Back won. The album debuted at number 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album features contributions from Briggs, N'fa, Funkoars and Urthboy. Drapht believes that this album was the toughest project in his career.

Adam Briggs, who performs as Briggs, is an Indigenous Australian rapper, record label owner, comedy writer, and actor. Briggs became well known as a solo rapper, signing with Golden Era Records in 2009, before co-founding the hip hop duo A.B. Original in 2016.
