Palmers Cross is a district in south-central Jamaica, located to the east of May Pen and north of Sandy Bay in the parish of Clarendon. The approximate population of Palmers Cross is 26,262. [1]

Palmers Cross is the home of The Container Project, a non-profit UNESCO project bringing technology and self-sustainable media training to 'hard-to-reach' young people in Jamaica. [2]

History

On the UK Directorate of Overseas Surveys 1:50,000 map of 1973, [3] two small, neighbouring communities are shown in this vicinity, both centred on minor road junctions:

  1. a village called The Cross with a school and postal agency
  2. a hamlet called Palmers

It seems that in the years since they have grown and merged, their names being combined in the process.

Amenities

There is a Junior High School formerly called Cross All-Age School. The name of the school is currently Cross Primary School. The closest health center is the Sandy Bay Health Center which is located in Sandy Bay. A doctor's office is also located at the Moments Plaza in the district. Residents can also visit the May Pen Hospital and the Main Street Health Center for medical assistance. [ citation needed ]

Portland Cottage light structure formerly Portland Lighthouse sometimes Portland Point Lighthouse is situated on the summit of Portland Ridge, Clarendon, near the southernmost part of Jamaica.

Built by the Engineering Department of the Port Authority of Jamaica, Lover's Leap Lighthouse is Jamaica's most recent. It is a 100 feet (30 m) tall cylindrical steel(?) tower with lantern and octagonal gallery. It is powered by three different power sources: a generator, electricity and a set of batteries.

Anchovy is a small town in the parish of Saint James in northwestern Jamaica. It is located 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) southwest of Montego Bay.

Juan de Bolas Mountain in Saint Catherine, Jamaica is named after Juan de Bolas, A Chief of a Group of Maroons who sided with the Spanish during the British Spanish war in Jamaica 1655. He was caught by the British and turned to their side and was instrumental in defeating the Spanish. He would then betray the maroons by revealing their settlement to the British and serving as a Maroon Hunter

The Juan de Bolas River rises in Saint Catherine, Jamaica, and flows through Saint Catherine and Clarendon. It is one of two rivers in Jamaica named after Juan de Bolas, the first Chief of the Jamaican Maroons.
