Palmiro Salas is a Guatemalan football coach best known for managing the Belize national football team during 2010 World Cup Qualification. Besides Guatemala, he has managed in Belize. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
As of 2018, Salas currently manages the San Pedro Pirates of the Premier League of Belize.
Sacked as head coach of the Belize national team in 2008 which was seen as an unjust decision by the Football Federation of Belize to some, after he led them to a 3–1 win over St Kitts and Nevis, [12] Salas became involved in a conflict with the FFB, making an incendiary statement that they were supposed to pay him 26000 Belize dollars when they only give him 5000. [13]
The Guatemalan returned to Belizean football in 2009 when announced as coach of Belize Defence Force. [14]

The club was established in 1976 as Real Verdes Football Club and changed their name to Hankook Verdes in 2004. They are now known only as Verdes F.C, locally being called only Verdes. The club is one of the oldest active professional football teams in Belize and has been in existence since the inception of the Football Federation of Belize. Julio René AlvaradoRuano was a fourteen-year-old Guatemalan male who was killed in the Belize–Guatemala adjacency zone during an armed confrontation between the Belize Defence Force, Belizean park rangers, and Guatemalan farmers. The incident raised tensions between Belize and Guatemala, who have an ongoing border dispute since 1821. Belizean officials maintain that the Belize Defence Force acted in self-defence. However, the Guatemalan government claims the incident was a deliberate attack carried out by Belize's military. After the incident, the Organisation of American States agreed to investigate the death of Julio Alvarado at the request of both countries.

A referendum on the territorial dispute with Belize was held in Guatemala on Sunday 15 April 2018. Voters were asked whether the Guatemalan government should request the International Court of Justice to resolve the territorial dispute permanently, as part of a commitment signed in December 2008 between Guatemala and Belize. Guatemalan Vice President, Jafeth Cabrera, stated that Belize would hold their referendum in response in May 2018, but Belize released a statement denying that and stating rather that it would hold the referendum after the re-registration process has occurred to ensure an accurate and fair vote.

Their semi-professional male team competes in the Premier League of Belize, the highest level of football in the country; their female team, named the Altitude Chicks, compete in the National Amateur Women's League (NAWL).
