panOULU is a municipal wireless network in Finland. panOULU is operated by City of Oulu, University of Oulu, Oulu University of Applied Sciences and Oulun Puhelin Oyj. The network coveres central Oulu (including various buildings, such as the city hall, public libraries, Oulun Energia Areena ice hockey arena, etc.), and the campus areas. In addition, outside of Oulu, the network covers Oulu Airport in Oulunsalo, the ferries to Hailuoto, University of Oulu campus in Kajaani, and the Chydenius Institute campus in Kokkola. The network also covers parts of Ylikiiminki. The network is free to use and requires no passwords; it can be used with any computer, cell phone, PDA or other device that is capable of using Wi-Fi.

A municipal wireless network is a citywide wireless network. This usually works by providing municipal broadband via Wi-Fi to large parts or all of a municipal area by deploying a wireless mesh network. The typical deployment design uses hundreds of wireless access points deployed outdoors, often on poles. The operator of the network acts as a wireless internet service provider.

Finland, officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe bordering the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, and Gulf of Finland, between Norway to the north, Sweden to the northwest, and Russia to the east. As of 2007^[update] the network has over 900 wireless access points.^[1] Based on coverage and potential number of users, it is currently the largest public wireless network in Finland.^[2] Also, it is the first free and open wireless network that operates in an airport in Finland.

In computer networking, a wireless access point (WAP), or more generally just access point (AP), is a networking hardware device that allows other Wi-Fi devices to connect to a wired network. The AP usually connects to a router as a standalone device, but it can also be an integral component of the router itself. An AP is differentiated from a hotspot, which is the physical location where Wi-Fi access to a WLAN is available.

Oulu Airport is located in Oulu, Finland, 5.7 NM south-west of the city centre. The airport is the second busiest in Finland after Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, as measured by the number of passengers. There are around twenty daily flights to Helsinki. Oulu Airport is also extensively used by the Finnish Air Force for training purposes. Recently the old terminal was demolished for more apron space. A major extension of the main terminal was completed in September 2011. Four new jetbridge gates were constructed and the main terminal was expanded by 4,300 square metres (46,000 sq ft), raising the capacity of the airport to 1.5 million passengers per year. The managing body of the airport is Finavia. Oulu Airport has offered free wireless network access for passengers since May 2007.

Oulun Lyseon Lukio is a Finnish upper secondary school in the city of Oulu in northern Finland. The school has over 60 teachers and about 750 students. In addition to the Finnish national curriculum the school provides the option to study the International Baccalaureate programme in English. Since 2018 Lyseo has a distance teaching campus in the small town of Tyrnävä. In 2018 255 students, of which 50 took the IB programme, were accepted to the school.

Oulu International School (OIS) is a public, not-for-profit, co-educational international school in the Myllytulli neighbourhood in Oulu, Finland. The school was founded in 2001. It is one of nine English-speaking schools in Finland that offer basic education.

Oulu University of Applied Sciences is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Finland with approximately 8,500 students, including around 240 international degree students. The number of incoming exchange students annually is approximately 280.

Karjasilta is a district in the Höyhtyä area in the city of Oulu, Finland. The district close to the city centre is bordered by the Raksila district to the north, Finnish national road 4 to the east, the Vanhatulli and Limingantulli districts to the west and the Nokela and Höyhtyä districts to the south.

The Hupisaaret Islands City Park is a public urban park in the Myllytulli district in central Oulu, Finland. The park is located in the delta of the River Oulu. The area was built as a public park in the 1860s, the first white wooden bridges that characterize the park were also built at the time.
