The Western Province is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Western Province is the most densely populated province in the country and is home to the legislative capital Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte as well as to Colombo, the nation's administrative and business center.

The 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka provides for the election of members of Parliament from 22 multi-member electoral districts through the proportional representation electoral system.
Sri Lanka has held several rounds of Provincial Council elections in 2008 and 2009 to elect members to eight of the country’s Provincial Councils. The decision to hold elections in different parts of the country on separate days was a break in the usual practice, which is to hold elections for the whole country on the same day. For each provincial council, members are elected to serve a five-year term. A chief minister for the province is chosen by the elected members.
Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the Governor of the North Western Province and as the Governors of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. A former representative of Matara District for the United People's Freedom Alliance in the Parliament of Sri Lanka, he served as the cabinet minister of parliamentary affairs, Minister of Media, Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Foreign Employment Welfare, deputy minister of civil aviation and as the cabinet minister of Investment Promotion. He was the state minister for State Enterprise Development in the government of President Maithripala Sirisena. He has been in parliament from 1994 and 2019.
Hemakumara Wickramathilaka Nanayakkara is a Sri Lankan politician and was the 7th Governor of the Western Province of Sri Lanka, in office from April to December 2018. He has also been a Governor of the Southern Province, a former member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and a former government minister. Nanayakkara played active roles for the United National Party victory at the 2001 general election. He was appointed as minister soon after the election. Later in 2007 he decided to support the UPFA. In 2012 Nanayakkara quit the UPFA to form his own party called Ruhunu Janatha Party. The party joined United National Party at the 2015 Presidential election to support the common candidate. Soon after the 2015 election victory, he was appointed the Governor of Southern Province.

Provincial governments of Sri Lanka are the devolved governments of the nine Provinces of Sri Lanka. In accordance with the Sri Lankan constitution, provinces have legislative power over a variety of matters including agriculture, education, health, housing, local government, planning, road transport and social services. Provincial council elections were held in Sri Lanka on 29 March 2014 to elect 159 members to two of the nine provincial councils in the country. 5.9 million Sri Lankans were eligible to vote in the election. Elections to a third provincial council (Uva) were held on 20 September. Elections to the remaining six provincial councils were not due as they had their last election in 2012 or 2013.
COVID-19 vaccination in Sri Lanka is an ongoing immunisation campaign against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19, in response to the ongoing pandemic in the country. As of late July, the Sinopharm BIBP vaccine accounted for 78% of the total 13.8 million vaccines obtained by Sri Lanka to date. The United States donated over 1.5 million Moderna vaccine through COVAX.
