The District of Luxembourg was one of three districts of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It contained four cantons, divided into 44 communes:
- Capellen
- Esch-sur-Alzette
- Luxembourg
- Mersch
Esch-sur-Alzette is a canton in southwestern Luxembourg. It is both the second most populous and second most densely populated canton after the canton of Luxembourg. It borders Belgium & France.
Bettembourg is a commune and town in southern Luxembourg. The country's eighth-most populous commune, it is part of the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette.
The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois is the national railway company of Luxembourg. In 2023, it carried approximately 28.7 million passengers. As of 2023, the company employs around 5,000 people, making CFL the country's largest corporate employer.
Howald is a town in the commune of Hesperange, in southern Luxembourg. The town merges almost seamlessly with Luxembourg City's south-eastern suburban quarter of South Bonnevoie, which lies to the north of Howald. As of 2024, the town has a population of 5,815, making it the most populous town in the commune and the 22nd-most populous in Luxembourg.
Noertzange is a small town in the commune of Bettembourg, in southern Luxembourg. In 2024, the town had a population of 1,072.
Fennange is a small town in the commune of Bettembourg, in southern Luxembourg. As of 2024, the town has a population of 418. A notable resident was the sculptor Maggy Stein.
Huncherange is a small town in the commune of Bettembourg, in southern Luxembourg. As of 2024, the town has a population of 706.
Niederkorn is a town in the commune of Differdange, in south-western Luxembourg, on the Chiers river, from which it takes its name. As of 2024, the town has a population of 7,663.
Hollerich is a quarter in south-western Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg.
The Red Lands form a geographic region in southern and south-western Luxembourg. They are so called for their red iron-laden earth. The Red Lands roughly correspond with the southern part of the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, along the border with France. Geologically, the Red Lands are sedimentary, mostly sandstones and conglomerates, formed in the Middle Jurassic epoch.
The 2006 Zoufftgen train collision occurred around 11.45 am on 11 October 2006, near Zoufftgen, Moselle, France, some 20 metres from the border with Luxembourg, on the Metz–Luxembourg railway line. Two trains collided head-on while one track of a double track line was out of service for maintenance. Six people, including the drivers of both trains, were killed: two Luxembourgers and four French. Twenty more were injured in the accident, two seriously.
Bettembourg railway station is a railway station serving Bettembourg, in southern Luxembourg. It is operated by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, the state-owned railway company.
Parc Merl is an urban park in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg.
Tourism in Luxembourg is an important component of the national economy, representing about 8.3% of GDP in 2009 and employing some 25,000 people or 11.7% of the working population. Despite the 2008–2012 global recession, the Grand Duchy still welcomes over 900,000 visitors a year who spend an average of 2.5 nights in hotels, hostels or on camping sites. Business travel is flourishing representing 44% of overnight stays in the country and 60% in the capital, up 11% and 25% between 2009 and 2010. Published by the World Economic Forum in March 2011, the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report puts Luxembourg in 15th place worldwide, up from 23rd place in 2009.
Bettembourg Castle located in the centre of Bettembourg in the south of Luxembourg has a history starting in 1733 when it was built as the residence of a farming family. Today it houses the offices and services of the local commune.
Line 90 is a railway line connecting Luxembourg City to France. The terminus at the north end is Luxembourg railway station, whilst the terminals at the south are the French towns of Metz and Nancy. It is designated Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois but predominantly operated by SNCF, as the TER Grand Est line L1.
Beetebuerger Basket Club Nitia or simply Nitia Bettembourg is a Luxembourg professional basketball club from the commune of Bettembourg.
SC Bettembourg is a Luxembourgish women's football club based in Bettembourg, Luxembourg. The club was founded in 1908 however the women's section has been in existence since 2012. SC Bettembourg play in Dames Ligue 1, the top flight of domestic women's football in Luxembourg. A second ladies team was introduced in 2014 and they currently play in the second tier. The team's colours are blue and white.
Volmerange-les-Mines railway station is a railway station serving Volmerange-les-Mines, in the north of the Moselle department in France. The station was opened on 15 December 2003, after the existing line from Bettembourg to Dudelange was extended. It is operated by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, the state-owned railway company, despite the fact that it is located in France. That is due to the fact that it is only connected to the Luxembourg rail network and is not directly connected to the French one.
