High school career

Turner prepped at Goodpasture Christian School in Madison, Tennessee, where he was a highly touted receiver, winning numerous All-American awards during his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. Turner participated in the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He was also on his high school's basketball team until his sophomore year. He also participated on the track team for all four years.

Turner was ranked as the #1 wide receiver in the country by ESPN's Tom Lemming and #5 out of the top 100 high school football players for 2005 before signing with the Trojans. [1]

College career

As a freshman during the 2005 season, Turner was an often-used backup wide receiver, catching 12 passes for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns. He appeared in 12 games, missing only the UCLA game due to injury.

As a sophomore, he moved up the depth chart to be the Trojans' third receiver under the John David Booty-led offense, after junior receiver Dwayne Jarrett and senior receiver Steve Smith. Turner stepped up several times when both Jarrett and Smith were injured and missed games over the season, including 12 catches for 116 yards against Washington. [2]

Going into 2007 spring training, Turner was projected to be the leading receiver of the 2007 Trojan squad in the fall, his junior season, [3] following in USC's recent line of star receivers starting with Mike Williams (who previously wore number 1) and Jarrett. [4] He returned some of the most impressive plays during the Spring. [5]

In 2007, Turner finished second on the team in receiving yards with 569 yards, following only TE Fred Davis, who led the team with 881 yards. With the departure of Davis to the NFL, Turner was expected to step up his production and become the number one option for the Trojans in 2008.[ citation needed ]

Turner was one of twelve USC players invited to the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine. [6]

Professional career

Miami Dolphins

Turner was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the third round (87th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. [7] He was cut after the 2010 Preseason.

New York Jets

On September 5, 2010, Turner was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets. [8] Turner was later waived by the team on September 7, 2010. [9] On September 10, 2010, Turner was re-signed by the team and placed on the practice squad. [10] On September 25, 2010, Turner was added to the Jets active roster. [11]

Following the team's Week Four matchup against the Buffalo Bills, Turner, along with teammate David Clowney, were released on October 4, 2010, to make room for defensive tackle Howard Green and wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who was returning from a four-game suspension. [12] Turner was later re-signed to the team's practice squad on October 6, 2010. [13]

The Jets activated Turner from the practice squad on November 18, 2010, as veteran receiver Jerricho Cotchery had suffered a groin injury. [14] He was waived on September 3, 2011. [15] He was re-signed to the practice squad on September 4, 2011. [16] Turner was signed to the active roster on September 14.

Turner was waived by the Jets on September 11, 2012. [17] He was re-signed on September 24, 2012. [18] Turner was waived again on October 2, 2012, after the team signed Lex Hilliard. [19]

The 2010 New York Jets season was the franchise's 51st season overall, the team's 41st season in the National Football League (NFL) and their first season at New Meadowlands Stadium. The team improved on their 9–7 record from 2009 and reached the playoffs again. The Jets were the subject of HBO's training camp series Hard Knocks. The Jets played their first pre-season game home against the New York Giants to open up Meadowlands Stadium. Many considered them AFC East favorites; head coach Rex Ryan went so far as to guarantee a Super Bowl victory. Jets broke a team record with a franchise best 6 consecutive wins on the road with a win against the Lions, followed by a win against the Browns in week 10. In the same victory against the Browns, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to win back-to-back road games in overtime. The Jets were the last NFL team to be undefeated on the road, before suffering a 45–3 loss at the New England Patriots in Week 13. The Jets met the Patriots again five weeks later in the AFC Divisional Round back in Foxborough where New York upset New England 28–21. The following week, the Jets lost 24–19 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship, ending their hopes of returning to the Super Bowl for the first time in 42 seasons and ending what would have been a Cinderella run. The Jets would have been the first AFC East team other than the Patriots to make a Super Bowl since 1993. They also failed to join the 1985 Patriots, 2005 Steelers, 2007 Giants, that year's Packers, and later the 2020 Buccaneers as the only NFL teams to win 3 straight playoff games on the road.

The 2011 New York Jets season was the franchise's 42nd season in the National Football League (NFL), the 52nd season overall and the team's third season under head coach Rex Ryan. Finishing 8–8, the Jets failed to improve upon their 11–5 record from 2010 and failed to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The Jets' 2011 season, from its NFL lockout-impacted start to the team's losing streak that marked its end, was chronicled extensively in Nicholas Dawidoff's 2013 book Collision Low Crossers: A Year Inside the Turbulent World of NFL Football. Beginning in the offseason, Dawidoff embedded himself with the team, primarily with defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and assistants Dennis Thurman and Mike Smith. This season would begin a lengthy postseason drought for the Jets. Since 2011, the team has failed to qualify for the playoffs.
