Pattern-Seeking Animals is an American progressive rock supergroup formed in 2018 by Ted Leonard, Dave Meros, John Boegehold and Jimmy Keegan; all of whom are current and former members and collaborators of fellow progressive rock ensemble Spock's Beard. [1] [2] [3]

Name

About the band's name, Leonard said in an interview: [2]

It's basically a description of the human being. What separates us from animals is our tendency (or necessity) to give a meaning to our surroundings. It's also part of the song "Bulletproof" from Spock's latest album which, once written, John added to his long list of bands/albums names.

History

The band was put together to perform some music that Boegehold had been writing in 2018, with Leonard and Meros co-writing some of the material. They eventually agreed to turn it into a band [2] [3] and now intend to release one album every year and go on tour with additional session musicians. [1]

After signing with Inside Out Music, the band released its first, self-titled album on July 5, 2019. [4] [3] The second album, Prehensile Tales, came out less than a year later, on May 15, 2020, [5] and was positively reviewed by Prog . [6]

Their third album, Only Passing Through, was released on April 1, 2022. [7] Their fourth album, Spooky Action at a Distance, was released on October 27, 2023. [8]

Meros has also played or recorded with such artists as Gary Myrick, Bobby Kimball of Toto, Simon Phillips, Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders and Big Big Train, Martin Orford and played for Eric Burdon and The Animals from 1990 through the end of 2005, and was the bass player for Iron Butterfly from 2015 through 2021. He was also tour manager for Eric Burdon and has worked as a tour manager for further artists as well. As a bassist, Meros' musical influences are varied, including Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, Chris Squire, James Jamerson, Marcus Miller, Francis "Rocco" Prestia of Tower of Power, Chuck Rainey and David Hungate.

James E. Keegan is an American drummer and voice actor. He has played with artists such as Santana, as the drummer on the song "Primavera" on Santana's hit album Supernatural and with John Waite. He was the drummer for the progressive rock band Spock's Beard, having replaced original drummer Nick D'Virgilio in November 2011. Before joining Spock's Beard, Keegan was their touring drummer since 2003, when D'Virgilio picked up the frontman and main singer role during live performances. Keegan was a member of Spock's Beard for five years, until he left in October 2016. Keegan is now the drummer of the progressive rock band Pattern-Seeking Animals.

X is the tenth studio album by American progressive rock band Spock's Beard. Similar to what Marillion did for Anoraknophobia, the album was funded by pre-orders of a limited edition of the album before the album was recorded. Those who ordered the album's "Ultra Package" had their names listed in the CD booklet and included as part of the track "Their Names Escape Me", which is exclusive to the limited edition. The album was released independently in May 2010. A retail and digital release with Mascot Records was released in August 2010. This album is the last studio album recorded with Nick D'Virgilio performing lead vocals, who left the band on November 18, 2011, to focus on other commitments. He rejoined the band in 2017 to play on the Noise Floor release, however his future in the band remains unknown.

D'Virgilio had previously recorded a new song with the band for the compilation album The First Twenty Years and a bonus track for the band's previous album The Oblivion Particle, both released in 2015.
