Paul Hanson (born January 17, 1957) is an American guitarist. He started playing guitar at the age of 8. He formed bands in his hometown of Seattle, Washington, most notably Krakatoa, Silverload and Max. He is best known for his instructional series of books, CDs and videos.
Hanson moved to Los Angeles in 1980 and attended GIT (part of Musicians Institute) in Hollywood, California. [1] After graduating he joined the Brooklyn Brats, a popular band in the Hollywood club circuit.
Hanson began working at Musicians Institute and taught a performance class with Tim Bogert the legendary bassist who was also a teacher at MI. In 1984 he created an instructional audio tape series called "Hard Rock Solos for Guitar" on REH Publishing. It was hugely successful and advertised with full page ads in the guitar magazines for years.
In 1986 Hanson was asked to tour with Tim Bogert's band The Vanilla Fudge along with Carmine Appice and Mark Stein. During the tour, an album entitled "The Best of Vanilla Fudge Live" was recorded at the Hollywood Palace and released on Rhino Records.
Hanson was featured in a guitar instructional video directed by Don Mock called Metal and Rock Improvising (Video, REH). He then toured as lead guitarist on Andy Taylor's Thunder World tour and appeared on the music video of "Don’t Let me Die Young". On the Japanese leg of the tour, a concert at NHK Hall in Tokyo was recorded and broadcast live in Japan.
In Hollywood, Hanson became a notable guitar coach teaching actors George Clooney, Michael J. Fox, [2] Eric Stoltz, Mitch Pileggi (X-files), María Conchita Alonso and Charlotte Ross. Hanson had a small role as one of the "Pinheads" in the film Back to the Future.
In 1988 Hanson signed with MGI records in Germany and recorded his first solo album The Visitor. He also became a clinician for Ampeg, Crate and Westone guitars and toured the US doing guitar clinics. His neighbor in LA was a retired music fan of the Big Band era, and Hanson became fascinated with music from the 1930s and 1940s and began working on an album of big band music played with heavy metal guitar.
In 1990 Hanson served as the head of the Rock Department at American Institute of Music in Vienna, Austria. During this time he finished his second solo album The Paul Hanson Orchestra, [3] all big band standards with metal guitar now available on iTunes from Across The Sound Music. He met the German bass player Ralf Meyer. They played together a show on MTV Hungary.
Hanson returned to the US in 1992 and taught at Musicians Institute [4] [5] and recorded jingles and music for film. A good example of his music "Conquest of Truth" can be heard on the main menu of the first The Matrix DVD. In addition, he has composed numerous music cues for TV and movie trailers including recent releases, The Fantastic Four and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby .
In the mid 1990s Hanson wrote the best-selling guitar instructional book and CD set Shred Guitar [6] published by Warner Bros., and now available from Alfred Publishing. He also created Arpeggios for Lead Guitar (Video, Hal Leonard). In 1999 he started working for Roland and Boss giving music clinics.
Relocating back to his home state of Washington he released his third solo album entitled Rain Dancer featuring all acoustic instrumentation.
As Product and Marketing Specialist for Boss U.S., in 2006 Hanson began producing and hosting a guitar talk radio podcast called Boss Tone Radio. Guests so far include Paul Gilbert, Frank Gambale, Marty Friedman, Steve Stevens, Rusty Anderson (Paul McCartney's band), Scott Henderson, Will Ray, Oz Noy, Michael Ward, Dave Navarro, Jeff Baxter and many others.
Hanson is also responsible for the "Pedals That Make the Tone" feature in Guitar World magazine and can be seen at http://www.BossUS.com/tone replicating the tones of the featured song transcriptions each month in the magazine.
In 2010 Hanson started a guitar lessons website called www.ShredGuitarOnline.com as a companion to his book Shred Guitar.
Vanilla Fudge is an American rock band known predominantly for their slow extended heavy rock arrangements of contemporary hit songs, such as their hit cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On".
Paul Brandon Gilbert is an American hard rock and heavy metal guitarist. He is the co-founder of the band Mr. Big, and was also a member of Racer X, with whom he released several albums. In 1996, Gilbert launched a solo career, for which he has released numerous solo albums, and featured in numerous collaborations and guest appearances on other musicians' albums.
Allan Holdsworth was a British jazz and rock guitarist, violinist and composer. He contributed to numerous bands, including Soft Machine, U.K., The Tony Williams Lifetime, Pierre Moerlen's Gong and Bruford, in addition to solo work.
John Peter Petrucci is an American guitarist, best known as a founding member of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. He produced or co-produced all of Dream Theater's albums from Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999), and has been the sole producer of the band's albums released since A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011). Petrucci has also released two solo albums: Suspended Animation (2005) and Terminal Velocity (2020).
Jason Eli Becker is an American composer and former guitarist. At the age of 16, he became part of the Shrapnel Records-produced duo Cacophony with his friend Marty Friedman, and they released two albums, Speed Metal Symphony (1987) and Go Off! (1988). Since the dissolution of Cacophony in 1989, Becker has undertaken a solo career, releasing seven albums since his 1988 debut Perpetual Burn. He later joined David Lee Roth's solo band and recorded one album with him, A Little Ain't Enough.
Carmine Appice is an American rock drummer. He is best known for his associations with Vanilla Fudge; Cactus; the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice; Rod Stewart; King Kobra; and Blue Murder. He is also Vinny Appice's older brother. Appice was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. He is also a more than capable (fretless-) bass player, as can be heard on the "Guitar Zeus" albums, for example.
John Voorhis "Tim" Bogert III was an American musician. As a bass guitarist and vocalist he was best known for his powerful vocal ability and his fast runs, fluid agility and ground-breaking sound on his Fender Precision Bass. He was one of the pioneers of using distortion with his bass to help it cut through the mix with the low-powered amps of his time which also imparted a very sharp-edged sound to it. He was a frequent collaborator with drummer Carmine Appice; the duo performed in such bands as Vanilla Fudge, Cactus and the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice.
Vince Martell is an American guitarist best known as the lead guitarist for Vanilla Fudge. Martell was born in the Bronx to parents who played the guitar and encouraged him to play as well. While in his teens, Martell joined the Navy, where he discovered his skills as a guitarist.
Jeff Loomis is an American musician, best known for his role as lead guitarist in the progressive metal band Nevermore during its existence from 1991 to 2011, as well as brief tenures in its precursor, Sanctuary. In 2014, he joined Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy, and in 2021 he joined Graham Bonnet's Alcatrazz as well. He left Arch Enemy in 2023. As a solo artist he has released two albums and one EP.

Demir Demirkan is a Turkish musician, Eurovision Song Contest winning composer, guitarist for thrash metal band Mezarkabul and writer. Demir Demirkan started playing music when he was 13 and played guitar with various groups in college. Demir Demirkan also wrote television jingles and composed soundtracks for television and films.
Mark Stein is an American keyboardist, composer and arranger, who is a member of the Psychedelic rock group Vanilla Fudge. Stein also worked in the Tommy Bolin band and Alice Cooper's band during 1978 and 1979.
Cactus is an American rock band formed in 1969. It is currently comprising Jimmy Kunes as lead singer, guitarist Paul Warren, drummer Carmine Appice, bassist Jimmy Caputo and Randy Pratt on harmonica.
Brett Edward Garsed is an Australian musician and songwriter, best known for his work as a guitarist with John Farnham and T. J. Helmerich, as well as being a former member of the American band Nelson. Garsed was featured on Derek Sherinian's solo records Planet X (1999) and Planet X's Quantum (2007), and more recently Sherinian's Molecular Heinosity (2010).
Steve Lynch is an American guitarist. He is best known as the co-founder and lead guitarist of the glam metal/hard rock band Autograph, which formed in 1983. He decided to commit himself to music and mastering guitar when Jimi Hendrix died in 1970. In addition to Hendrix, Lynch's influences came from late-1960s and early-1970s rock musicians such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Beatles. He initially played bass, however Hendrix's death in 1970 influenced him to switch to guitar.

Hollywood Monsters was an American hard rock supergroup from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2013. The band members include Steph Honde, Don Airey, Danko Jones (vocals), Ronnie Robson (bass), Vinny Appice, and Tim Bogert.
Rafael Moreira is a Brazilian-American guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and record producer, best known as the lead guitarist / vocalist on the hit CBS television shows Rock Star: INXS and Rock Star: Supernova, MTV's Rock The Cradle and most recently on NBC's The Voice. He has also appeared as lead guitarist / supporting vocalist live on world tours and television, as well as on CD & DVD releases, with world-renowned and groundbreaking artists such as Paul Stanley (KISS), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins, Tommy Lee and Natasha Bedingfield. Rafael has also performed as the lead guitarist for Grammy-winning artists Pink, Christina Aguilera, Don Felder Marc Anthony, Colbie Caillat and Mýa.
Steph Honde is a French singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Honde is most famous for being the frontman and songwriter of the American hard rock supergroup, Hollywood Monsters which he founded in 2013. Before Hollywood Monsters, Honde was the guitarist of the French rock band Café Bertrand from 2004 to 2010, when he resigned from the band and joined Paul Di'Anno band as the guitarist on tour across France.
