Paul Allan Maunder MNZM (born 8 February 1945) is a New Zealand film director, playwright and cultural activist. He is best known for his 1979 film of the novel Sons for the Return Home by Albert Wendt, his 1983 play Hemi about the life of James K. Baxter, and his work in community-based theatre.
Maunder was born in Palmerston North and attended Palmerston North Boys' High School. [1] He played one first-class cricket match for Central Districts in the 1961–62 season. [2] He studied at Victoria University of Wellington, the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney and the London Film School. [3]
Returning to New Zealand, Maunder worked for the state-owned National Film Unit. In addition to dire cting a number of the documentaries the unit was best known for, he directed three drama productions which were screened on television: Gone up North for a While, One Of Those People That Live In The World and Landfall (the film debut of Sam Neill).
In 1971, Maunder formed the Amamus theatre troupe in Wellington, staging improvised documentary plays on historical subjects such as the Great Depression and the 1951 waterfront lock-out. The group was then influenced by the work of Jerzy Grotowski and devised a trio of plays: Gallipoli, Valita and Oedipus, which examined the Kiwi psyche. In 1975 they were invited to the Festival of the Open Theatre in Wroclaw, Poland. In the 1980s, under the new name of Theatre of the Eighth Day, the group performed a series of political plays, followed by a study on the poet James K Baxter, before embarking on a bicultural series of works, examining the clash of the Maori culture with the settler arrivals.
In 1987, Maunder was awarded a Commonwealth Study Grant to make contact with the Popular Theatre Movement in Zimbabwe. Returning to New Zealand he worked in the community-based theatre framework, setting up the Cultural Work Centre in Petone. A number of partnerships followed, for example, with the Tokelau community and with the Auckland Unemployed Workers Rights Centre. [4] [5]
Since 2001, Maunder has lived in the small town of Blackball on the West Coast where he works with a community-based theatre group, Kiwi/Possum Productions. The group has mounted a series of plays written by Maunder on local issues: 1080 poison (Poison and Purity), the Pike River Mine disaster (Goodnight, Irene), race relations (The Cave Above the Pa), mine closures (The Judgement of Ben Alder), heritage (Ted, Poppy and World War Two), mental health (A Brief History of Madness), and the transition economy (The Measures Taken). [6] These plays tour the Coast and usually further afield. Maunder is also curator of Mahi Tupuna, the Blackball Museum of Working Class History. Maunder completed a master's thesis at the University of Canterbury in 2007, with a thesis on Rachel Corrie, [7] and received a doctorate in Theatre and Film Studies in 2010 from the same institution. His PhD thesis was titled The Rebellious Mirror, Community-based Theatre in Aotearoa/ [8]
Maunder's recent publications include: Tornado and Other Stories Written Overtime (2009, Maitai River Press), Coal and the Coast: Reflections on the Pike River Disaster (2012, Canterbury University Press) and Rebellious Mirrors: Community-based Theatre in Aotearoa/New Zealand (2013, Canterbury University Press), West Coast Plays with an introduction by Carol Dauber), Te Puawai Co-operative Society, 2017 The Visit to Grandad (for children), Te Puawai (2018), Performer, a memoir (Te Puawai, 2021. He has edited the Labour History Project Bulletin since 2019.
In the 2023 New Year Honours, Maunder was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the arts and the community. [9]
Most of Maunder's plays are on subjects related to politics, class, activism, the history of the labour movement or the NZ experience.
Tungia Dorothea Gloria Baker was a New Zealand actor, weaver, and administrator. Her notable acting roles included Ngahuia in the 1980s television drama Open House and Hira in the 1993 film The Piano. Baker was influential in contemporary Māori theatre, Māori film making and Māori arts. She named the Taki Rua Theatre, and was a founding member of Māori artists' collectives Te Manu Aute and Haeata.
Downstage Theatre was a professional theatre company in Wellington, New Zealand, that ran from 1964 to 2013. For many years it occupied the purpose-built Hannah Playhouse building. Former directors include Sunny Amey, Mervyn Thompson, and Colin McColl.
The Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards were the main theatre awards in New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, from 1992–2014, and have been succeeded by the Wellington Theatre Awards.
Victor John Rodger is a New Zealand journalist, actor and award-winning playwright of Samoan and Pākehā heritage. Rodger's play Sons won acclaim at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards (1998) and received the Best New Writer and Most Outstanding New New Zealand Play awards. In 2001, he won the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award. Other plays include Ranterstantrum (2002) and My Name is Gary Cooper (2007), produced and staged by Auckland Theatre Company and starred a Samoan cast including Robbie Magasiva, Anapela Polataivao, Goretti Chadwick and Kiwi actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand.
Riwia Brown is a New Zealand playwright. She is the screenwriter of the popular and award-winning New Zealand movie Once Were Warriors (1994). The Once Were Warriors screenplay, adapted from the book of the same name by Alan Duff, gained Brown the Best Screenplay award at the 1994 New Zealand Film and TV Awards. Brown has written for theatre, television and films.
Stephen Sinclair is a New Zealand playwright, screenwriter and novelist. He is the co-author of stage comedy Ladies Night. In 2001, the French version won the Molière Award for stage comedy of the year. Other plays include The Bellbird and The Bach, both of which are prescribed texts for Drama Studies in New Zealand secondary schools.
Sarah Delahunty is a New Zealand writer and director who was born in Wellington. An award-winning playwright, Delahunty has written over 30 plays, often focussing on works for youth.
Gary Henderson is a New Zealand playwright, director and teacher. Henderson's work has been produced both nationally and internationally with his play Skin Tight having travelled to Edinburgh, New York City and Canada. Whilst at the 1998 Edinburgh Fringe Festival it won the Fringe First Award. In 2013 Henderson received a $20,000 Playmarket Award, acknowledging his contribution to New Zealand theatre.

Taki Rua is a theatre organisation based in Wellington, New Zealand that has produced many contemporary Māori theatre productions. Taki Rua has been going since 1983 and has had several name changes over that time including The New Depot, Depot Theatre and Taki Rua / The Depot. The full current name is Taki Rua Productions. Since inception the mission of Taki Rua has been to showcase work from New Zealand. Because of this and the longevity of Taki Rua many significant New Zealand actors, directors, writers, designers and producers have part of the history including Riwia Brown, Nathaniel Lees, Rachel House and Taika Waititi.

She has collaborated on many theatre and screen productions including feature films, short films, television commercials and theatre. As an educator she completed a PhD at the University of Waikato in 2015, titled Removing the ‘Cloak of Invisibility’: New Zealand Directors Discuss Theatre Directing Praxis. Byrnes has been in senior roles at both Toi Whakaari and Unitec Institute of Technology, leading drama training for many years. She is an experienced theatre director and as an actor was in popular television soap opera Shortland Street.
