Paul Omerenyia Ururuka (1910-1970) was a former Minister of Works in the Old Eastern Region of Nigeria and a former Minister of Commerce, and of Transport in the Administration of Dr. Michael Okpara, the Premier of Eastern Nigeria. In 1965, he was conferred with the National Honour of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) by the President, Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, [1] in recognition of his services to Nigeria.

Early life and education

Ururuka was born in 1910 in Umunkpeyi, Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South of Abia State, Nigeria [2] to Mr. Ururuka Ajereh and Orianu Ururuka Ajereh. He obtained his Standard Six Certificate with distinction from Christ the King School, Aba. He later enrolled at the St. Charles Teachers' Training College, Onitsha, obtaining a Teacher Grade II and later Grade I Certificates [3] and subsequently enrolled for the General Certificate of Education, London as a private student. For further education, Ururuka proceeded to the Trinity College, Dublin, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and an MSc in Geography.

Career

Ururuka was elected in 1954 to represent Ngwaland in the Eastern Region House of Assembly, and was later appointed Minister in the Cabinet of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Dr. Michael Okpara. He held several cabinet positions in the Eastern Region [4] .

Statue and immortalization

A statue of Ururuka was erected at the Obikabia Junction in Aba by Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the then Governor of Abia State [5] [6] to immortalise him. Ururuka is fondly remembered for bringing infrastructural development to Ngwa land, and for building strong and durable road networks which have stood the test of time, facilitating commerce, logistics and road travel. Aba is a city in southeastern Nigeria and the commercial centre of Abia State. Upon the creation of Abia State in 1991, the old Aba township was divided into two local government areas, being Aba South and Aba North, while the suburban neighborhood of what was then known as Obioma Ngwa L.G.A. was divided into three L.G.A.s for administrative convenience. Aba South is the main city centre of Aba and Abia State at large, being located on the Aba River. Aba is made up of many villages such as Aba-Ukwu, Eziukwu-Aba, Obuda-Aba, Umuokpoji-Aba and other villages that have been merged for administrative convenience. Aba North is a Local Government Area in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. In the year (1991) Aba North local government was created. The headquarters is at Eziama Uratta. It is amongst the local governments that make up Abia South senatorial zone. Aba North is in the South East geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The Igbo ethnic group is predominant in the area. The people of the area are mostly Christians and traditional worshippers with Igbo and English as the commonly spoken languages. Aba North, an integral part of Ngwaland, consists of indigenes and migrants from other parts of the state who reside in Aba for entrepreneurial and other purposes.

Ikwuano is a Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in Isiala Oboro. The name 'Ikwuano' etymologically indicates that there are four different ancient kingdoms that make up the community called Ikwuano. These include Oboro, Ibere, Ariam/Usaka and Oloko.

Osisioma Ngwa is a Local Government Area of Abia state of Nigeria. Its headquarters are located in Osisioma town.

Otti is the former Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc, a retail financial institution in Nigeria. Otti was a gubernatorial candidate of Abia State on the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). On 31 December 2015, The Court of Appeal which sat in Owerri removed Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party as governor of Abia State and declared Otti the winner of the April 11 and April 25 Governorship elections in the state. On February 3, 2016, the Supreme Court of Nigeria reversed the verdict of the Court of Appeal and affirmed the election of Ikpeazu as Governor. Otti is a member of the editorial board of Thisday, and writes a fortnightly column, every other Monday, titled "Outside The Box".

Okezie Victor Ikpeazu is a Nigerian politician and former Governor of Abia State, who was in office from 29 May 2015 to 29 May 2023. He was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. He was re-elected as the Governor of Abia state at the 9 March 2019 gubernatorial election. He ran for election at the 2023 Senatorial election for Abia South Senatorial District but came a distant third behind incumbent Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of All Progressive Grand Alliance and a political newbie Chinedu Onyeizu of the Labour Party.

Anthony Obiagboso Enukeme was a Nigerian businessman from Anambra State, south-eastern Nigeria. The 2023 Abia State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Abia State, concurrent with elections to the Abia State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP governor Okezie Ikpeazu was term-limited and could not seek a third term. Alex Otti, a banker, gained the office for the Labour Party by a margin of victory over first runner-up and PDP nominee—Okey Ahiwe, the former Chief of Staff to Ikpeazu.

The Abia State College of Education (Technical) is a state government higher education institution located in Arochukwu, Abia State, Nigeria. It is affiliated to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture and Abia State University for its degree programmes. The current Provost is Philips O. Nto.

Ahaba is a rural community in Oloko, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. Isiala Ahaba and Ahaba Ukwu are the autonomous communities of Ahaba. Ahaba is 23km south of Umuahia, Abia State's capital city.
