Pedro Diaz (born November 26, 1962) is a Cuban and American boxing trainer and founder of Mundo Boxing [1] a training facility for professional, amateur boxers and mixed martial artists. His record as a trainer is 127 wins, including 21 World Titles (most recently Imane Khelif at the 2024 Paris Olympics and Noel Mikaelian for the WBC world title), and 18 losses.[ as of? ] As an amateur boxing trainer, Diaz worked with the Cuban national team for four Olympic Games in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. [2] He also worked with the Dominican Republic for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 where they won the countries first ever Gold Medal in Boxing and 2nd Gold medal. As a professional boxing trainer, Diaz trains a stable of boxers and MMA fighters, [3] including Roamer Alexis Angulo, Ivan Baranchyk, Xu Can, Miguel Cotto, [4] Filip Hrgovic, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Tyrone Spong, and Vitor Belfort.

Early life and Cuba

Before becoming a boxing trainer, Diaz trained under Alcides Sagarra and was an accomplished amateur boxer. [5] He attended the Cuban Sports University specializing in boxing, and in 1999 he earned the title of Doctor in Pedagogical Sciences. [5]

America and professional boxing

In 2010 Diaz moved to the United States and continued training boxers and UFC fighters as well. [6] Diaz trained boxers for notable fights such as Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto, [7] Nonito Donaire vs Guillermo Rigondeaux, Vasyl Lomachenko vs Guillermo Rigondeaux, which was the first time two dual Olympic gold medalist fought on a professional stage, [8] and Jose Zepeda vs Ivan Baranchyk, which won the 2020 boxing fight of the year by CBS and USA Today Sports. The bout was held on December 9, 2017 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lomachenko and Rigondeaux are regarded as two of the best amateurs in history, with each boxer winning two Olympic gold medals. It was the first time dual gold medal winners fought professionally, and it was a fight the great Roy Jones Jr. stated, "To me, on paper, this is the best professional fight that has ever been made." Lomachenko won by TKO when Rigondeaux retired on his stool after round 6 after claiming to have injured his left hand.
