Pedro Rosa Nales (born December 3, 1956, in Fajardo, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican journalist, news anchor and a recognized martial artist. As a journalist he has received over 20 awards.

Journalism

He started working at radio station WMDD in Fajardo. As a television journalist, he was recruited by the WAPA-TV channel 4 of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1981, becoming the first black Puerto Rican to work as a TV reporter. [1] During his 32 years as a TV journalist, he had won more than 100 awards from several organizations in Puerto Rico and the United States, including awards for the coverage of hurricanes and investigative reports like Red Alert 1 and 2, in which he uncovered the military use of the Vieques island and the effects of army maneuvers on the population. [2]

In the past years, he has worked as a host (Anchor) on various editions of Noticentro 4 on WAPA TV [3] [4] and in 2014 on "Noticentro America" for viewers in the United States. [5] In 2017, he anchored the 5 p.m. news hour for Noticentro. [6] In 2018, Noticentro Al Amanecer (Noticentro In the Morning) celebrated eighteen years on air. [7]

Rosa Nales sued WAPA-TV during December 2020 for the amount of $2.5 million dollars, alleging he was ignored in favor of White colleagues when the network decided to install Rafael Lenin Lopez as main afternoon news reporter instead of him due to Rosa Nales' being Black and also an older person than Lenin Lopez. Martial arts

When memes of Rosa Nales, in martial arts poses, were discovered on the net, he gladly shared with the public that he has practiced martial arts all his life, for over 47 years. [9]

Personal life

He served in the United States Army as a parachutist from the 82nd Airborne Division, in the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He was later Press officer, Executive officer, Radio and Tv officer and Unit commander in the Puerto Rico National Guard with the rank of captain.

In 2023 he was inducted to the Puerto Rico Veterans Hall of Fame. [10]

Rosa Nales married young, and his wife had a daughter when he was just seventeen years old. They divorced while he was in the army. He has two children but in 2012, Rosa Nales 32-year-old daughter, who had fought addiction with the help of Hogares Crea, died of a possible overdose. [11]

On June 29, 2021, Pedro Rosa Nales' sixteen year-old grandson was accused of murder, along with another teenager. [12] [13]

<i>En La Mañana</i> Puerto Rican TV series or program

En La Mañana is a Puerto Rican breakfast television show that airs on TeleOnce. The show is a revival of the original breakfast show called Tu Mañana that aired on TeleOnce from 1991 to 2002 and in Univision Puerto Rico television network from 2002 to 2014. The original version of the show debuted on March 11, 1991, and was aired on weekday mornings. On October 14, 2014, the show was cancelled as part of a restructuring of Univision Puerto Rico's operations that included the closure of its news department. With the sale of WLII-DT from Univision to Liberman Media Group the new owners have announced they intend to revive Tu Mañana in 2023. The show's revival was officially announced on October 17, 2023, with a premiere date set for October 30, 2023. For the revival, the show's name was slightly tweaked from Your Morning to In The Morning

<i>SuperXclusivo</i> Puerto Rican gossip/news show

SuperXclusivo was a Puerto Rican gossip show broadcast on TeleOnce (WLII-DT). The show, originally premiered on WAPA-TV as SuperXclusivo on January 24, 2000. It was hosted by puppet gossiper La Comay — The Gossiper, created, voiced and puppeteered by Kobbo Santarrosa. La Comay was joined by a co-host and sidekick, which has been filled by Héctor Travieso, Roque Gallart and, Yan Ruiz. La Comay, the character, presents celebrity and political gossip, as well as news and social commentary on local issues. Through its original run, SuperXclusivo maintained the top position in local ratings. The show ended its original run on WAPA-TV on January 9, 2013, after Kobbo Santarrosa resigned from the network amid boycotts against him for homophobic allegations he made on air through the puppeteering of La Comay. On December 19, 2018, it was confirmed that La Comay would be returning to television to Mega TV after years of speculation. The new show, titled after the puppet gossiper, premiered on January 28, 2019 and ended on December 18, 2020, after Santarrosa decided not to renew the show's contract with the network. This resulted the show to move to TeleOnce on March 1, 2021, with comedian Yan Ruiz as the new co-host.

The second season of Idol Puerto Rico premiered on July 29, 2012, and ended on November 12, 2012. Like the previous season, it is hosted by Jaime Augusto Mayol. The victory went to Gremal Maldonado. Its origin is Dominican-Puerto Rican.

The Justas de Atletismo y Festival Deportivo de Puerto Rico —better known as Las Justas Intercolegiales or simply as Las Justas — is an intercollegiate sports competition held annually in Puerto Rico where Puerto Rican colleges and universities compete against each other in different sports. The event is sponsored by the Liga Atlética Interuniversitaria de Puerto Rico (LAI). The event usually include competitions in softball, basketball, beach volleyball, judo, table tennis, swimming, cheerleading, women's football, and athletics.

Roque José Gallart Ortiz, also known as Rocky the Kid, is a Puerto Rican broadcaster personality and occasional actor. Gallart replaced Héctor Travieso as co-host La Comay for the remainder of the show's run on Mega TV. Keylla Ivonne Hernández Ramos, better known as Keylla Hernández, was a Puerto Rican television reporter. She worked for WAPA-TV. She was the co-anchor of the station's morning news show, Noticentro al Amanecer.

Jennifer Wolff Conde is a Puerto Rican television reporter, show host, company executive and writer. From 1981 to 1996, Wolff appeared on multiple Puerto Rican television news shows, becoming a celebrity in the island. She has also written several published papers, including "Hacia Donde Va el Sistema Electrico? Una Mirada de Contexto", "Europa: Que Esta en Juego con la Invasion Rusa" and "Desde Madrid: En el Radar Para el 2022". Wolff also wrote a doctoral thesis, which she named "Isla Atlántica: Puerto Rico 1580–1636. Comercio de Contrabando y la Conformación del Espacio Atlántico en el Caribe Periférico".

Luz Nereida Vélez is a Puerto Rican television news reporter and anchorwoman on the WAPA-TV news show NotiCentro 4, having worked since 1978.

Cyd Marie Fleming is a Puerto Rican television news journalist. She was once an anchorwoman for a show named "Las Noticias" on Tele-Once, a major Puerto Rican television network.

José Enrique "Kike" Cruz Díaz, better known as Enrique "Kike" Cruz, is a Puerto Rican television journalist. A former news director of Canal 4, Cruz is in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the longest career as a television news director, being the news director of Canal 4's news show, Noticentro 4, for 42 years.

NotiCentro (NewsCenter) is the flagship news broadcast of Puerto Rican network WAPA which airs four times a day on weekdays and twice a day on weekends. Its main edition is anchored by Normando Valentín and Katiria Soto while Pedro Rosa Nales anchors the nighttime edition. Weekend anchoring duties belong to Felipe Gómez and Luisa Sotero, while weekday mornings are anchored by Jorge Gelpí Pagán and Mónica Candelaría.
