Sir Pedro de Negro or Sir Pedro Negro (died 1551) was a Spanish soldier who fought for Henry VIII of England and Edward VI of England in France and Scotland. [1]

Career and knighthood

Pedro de Negro commanded calvalrymen armed with muskets during the war between England and Scotland now known as the Rough Wooing. The war began in 1544, sparked by plans for Mary, Queen of Scots to marry Edward VI. [2] Some of the leather horse armour used by the English cavalry was made by an Italian specialist Niccolo da Modena. Both sides made use of foreign military expertise. By April 1547, Pedro de Negro received a pension and annuity from the English exchequer of £100 yearly. [3] W. C. According to William Patten, Pedro de Negro was knighted by the Duke of Somerset following the battle of Pinkie and the capture of Leith on 28 September 1547 at Roxburgh Castle. [4] [5] Two other Spanish captains were knighted, Christpher Diaz and Alonso de Ville. [6] Another source lists Pedro Negro and Alonso de Villeseige among knights made by the Earl of Warwick at Berwick-upon-Tweed. [7] On New Year's Day, Edward VI gave him a half mark (6s-8d) as a reward. [8] English sources sometimes name him as "Petro Negro" or "Peter Negroo".

Siege of Haddington

An English army occupied and fortified the town of Haddington, East Lothian as a foothold in Scotland. Haddington is near to the coast and could be supplied by sea and land. [9] French and Scottish forces surrounded Haddington. In June 1548, the English commander Grey of Wilton chose Pedro de Negro, and 100 Spanish soldiers from Pedro de Gamboa's command to reinforce the garrison. [10] On 29 June 1548 Pedro Negro and the Spanish troops tried unsuccessfully to cross enemy lines into the town. [11] In July, French troops prepared ladders for an assault on the town. The English army outside the town made plans to get supplies to the defenders. [12]

On 7 July 1548, an English soldier Thomas Holcroft described a plan, that 150 of Pedro de Gamboa's mounted arquebusiers, commanded by Pedro de Negro, and other soldiers would ride through French lines from Linton bridge to relieve the siege. Some of the force would ride back to the English camp, while others would join the garrison in Haddington, after being "well-instructed how to work for their defence within". [13] The Scottish leader, Regent Arran, ordered the gentlemen of Lothian to assemble and block the approach to Haddington on the River Tyne east of the Abbey of St Mary at Haddington. [14] According to a Spanish chronicle now known as the Chronicle of Henry VIII, Pedro de Negro successfully broke through. The chronicle relates that the Spanish and English cavalrymen rode into Haddington carrying bags of gunpowder. Rather than return to Linton through enemy lines, they slaughtered their own horses outside the town gates. The rotting horses in the summer heat deterred French attacks. After the French and Scottish had withdrawn, Pedro de Negro buried them in three pits. [15]

Somerset told a French diplomat Odet de Selve about the exploit, or "belle hystoyre" of 400 arquebusiers who each carried 20 pounds of powder through the Scottish lines into the town. [16] The Scottish records suggest that the siege was not abandoned at this time. Robert Hamilton, the son of Robert Hamilton of Briggis, hauled the cannon called "thrawyn-mouth" from Dunbar Castle to batter the town. [17] A cavalry force led by Thomas Palmer was defeated by the French on 16 July, a loss described by Ulpian Fulwell in his Flower of Fame (London, 1575), and by John Knox in his History. [18]

At the end of July, the French diplomat Odet de Selve reported that the delivery of the bags of gunpowder and the efforts of "Pietro Negro" and "Captain Windent" were the talk of the court in London. [19] However, some doubt remains about the date of their exploit, Thomas Fisher wrote on 30 July that Baynbridge was preparing a second convoy of men and powder, while a coded note from James Wilsford, the Captain of Haddington, dated 3 August, discusses a plan with horsemen carrying powder as a future event, and Wilsford says the town could not support their horses. [20]

In February or March 1549 Pedro Negro and his band of Spanish soldiers joined John Luttrell at Broughty Castle near Dundee. In July Luttrell complained that the Spanish soldiers had not yet received pay or clothing. [21] A note made in January 1550 records that a soldier called Hans de Froement borrowed £6 from a Juan de Cosio to give to Pedro Negro. He hoped that Luttrell would ensure Juan de Cosio was repaid. Broughty surrendered and Luttrell was captured by the English soon after, on 12 February 1550. [22]

Pedro and the taking of Captain Julian

Captain Julián Romero was stationed at Cheswick in Northumberland in May 1549 and "Pero Negro" was close by at Kyloe and Fenwick near Lindisfarne. [23] A chronicle of the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots mentions the defeat and capture of Spanish soldiers led by "Julius Romanus", Julián Romero, near Coldingham in the spring of 1549. [24]

In September 1549 Pedro was blamed for the capture by the Scots of Captain Julián Romero by other Spanish soldiers and Captain Gamboa. The controversy was mentioned by the courtier Richard Scudamore. A feud amongst the Spanish soldiers led to Gamboa's murder in London. [25]

Lady Home and the Moor

Marion Haliburton, Lady Home returned to Hume Castle after it was recaptured from the English. She wrote in favour of the Spanish cavalrymen (who owed money to her villagers) to Mary of Guise in March 1549, that they behaved "like noble men, and also the Mour, he is as sharp a man as rides, beseeching your grace to be a good princess unto him". [26] The "Mour" or "Moor" seems to have been an African officer amongst the Spanish cavalry. [27]

London

Pedro Negro died in London from the "sweating sickness" on 14 July 1551. [28] In his will, [29] he names his friend Captain Christopher Diaz his sole executor; he leaves his entire property to his (unnamed) son when he comes of age, apart from a bequest to a putative daughter in Italy: "And yf by fortune that a daughter that I have in Ittaly to be approved to be my daughter then I will she have Fiftie ducats". [30]

His surname "Negro" has been interpreted to mean he was of African descent. [31] It has also been suggested that he belonged to a family called "Negro" from Genoa, many of whom settled in Spain and Portugal. [32]

Broughty Castle is a historic castle on the banks of the River Tay in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland. It was completed around 1495, although the site was earlier fortified in 1454, when George Douglas, 4th Earl of Angus, received permission to build on the site. His son, Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus, was coerced into ceding the castle to the crown. The main tower house forming the centre of the castle with four floors was built by Andrew, 2nd Lord Gray, who was granted the castle in 1490.

Dunglass is a hamlet in East Lothian, Scotland, lying east of the Lammermuir Hills on the North Sea coast, within the parish of Oldhamstocks. It has a 15th-century collegiate church, now in the care of Historic Scotland. Dunglass is the birthplace of Sir James Hall, an 18th-century Scottish geologist and geophysicist. The name Dunglass comes from the Brittonic for "grey-green hill".

Dunbar Castle was one of the strongest fortresses in Scotland, situated in a prominent position overlooking the harbour of the town of Dunbar, in East Lothian. Several fortifications were built successively on the site, near the English-Scottish border. The last was slighted in 1567; it is a ruin today.

The sieges of Haddington were a series of sieges staged at the Royal Burgh of Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland, as part of the War of the Rough Wooing, one of the last Anglo-Scottish Wars. Following Regent Arran's defeat at the battle of Pinkie Cleugh on Saturday 10 September 1547, he captured the town of Haddington. The intention was to form a network of mutually supporting English forts in lowland Scotland. The English forces built artillery fortifications and were able to withstand an assault by the besieging French and Scots troops supported by heavy cannon in July 1548. Although the siege was scaled down after this unsuccessful attempt, the English garrison abandoned the town on 19 September 1549, after attrition by Scottish raids at night, sickness, and changing political circumstance.

André de Montalembert (1483–1553), Seigneur d'Essé, was a French nobleman and officer of the 16th century. As a young boy he fought in the Italian Wars. He was chosen by Francis I as one of his three brothers-in-arms in 1520 at the Field of the Cloth of Gold tournaments with Henry VIII of England.

The Rough Wooing, also known as the Eight Years' War, was part of the Anglo-Scottish Wars of the 16th century. Following its break with the Catholic Church, England attacked Scotland, partly to break the Auld Alliance and prevent Scotland being used as a springboard for future invasion by France, partly to weaken Scotland, and partly to force the Scottish Parliament to confirm the existing marriage alliance between Mary, Queen of Scots, and the English heir apparent Edward, son of King Henry VIII, under the terms of the Treaty of Greenwich of July 1543. An invasion of France was also contemplated.

Sir Andrew Dudley, KG was an English soldier, courtier, and diplomat. A younger brother of John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland, he served in Henry VIII's navy and obtained court offices under Edward VI. In 1547–1548 he acted as admiral of the fleet and participated in the War of the Rough Wooing in Scotland, where he commanded the English garrison of Broughty Castle. He was appointed captain of the fortress of Guînes in the Pale of Calais in late 1551. There he got involved in a dispute with the Lord Deputy of Calais, which ended only when both men were replaced in October 1552.

Lion was the name of five warships of the Royal Scottish Navy during the 16th century, some of which were prizes captured by, and from the English. The names of these ships reflect the Royal Arms of Scotland and its central motif of the Lion Rampant.

Mariotta or Maryon or Marion Haliburton, Lady Home was a 16th-century Scottish noblewoman. She varied the spelling of her forename between Mariotta, Marion, and Mary. She is remembered for her defence and negotiation of the surrender of Hume Castle after the Battle of Pinkie when the castle was surrounded by an English army. Afterwards she continued to struggle for the rights of her people at the village of Hume in the Scottish Borders, writing both to the English commander and the Scottish leader.

The siege of St Andrews Castle (1546–1547) followed the killing of Cardinal David Beaton by a group of Protestants at St Andrews Castle. They remained in the castle and were besieged by the Governor of Scotland, Regent Arran. However, over 18 months the Scottish besieging forces made little impact, and the Castle finally surrendered to a French naval force after artillery bombardment. The Protestant garrison, including the preacher John Knox, were taken to France and used as galley slaves.

Pedro de Gamboa was a Spanish soldier who fought for Henry VIII of England in France and Scotland.

Dunglass Castle was a castle at Dunglass in East Lothian, Scotland. It was a seat of the Home family and frequently visited by the Stewart kings. A fortification was built during the Rough Wooing. There are no upstanding masonry remains of the castle. A more recent mansion has also been demolished. The medieval Dunglass Collegiate Church at the site is maintained by Historic Environment Scotland.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">African presence at the Scottish royal court</span>

A number of people of African origin were recorded as servants at the Royal Court of Scotland during the 16th-century, forming a notable African presence at the Scottish royal court. The accounts include gifts of clothing. The American scholar Kim F. Hall has characterised these people as "dehumanised alien curiosities", and their histories, roles at court, and their relationships with communities, are the subject of continuing research and debate.
