Peggy Alford is an American business executive and professional certified public accountant. She has worked in various executive positions in some of the largest corporations in the US, including PayPal, eBay, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, [1] and Arthur Andersen LLP. Alford went to the University of Dayton and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Administration degree in 1993. She also serves as a board member in several organisations, including Macerich Company and Social Social Finance Inc. In 2019, she was nominated to join the board of directors of Facebook. [2] If elected, she will become the first African American woman to be on the board of the company since its founding.

Background and education

Peggy Alford was born in 1972. In 1989, she joined the University of Dayton. In 1993, she graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Administration. [3] Alford is also a certified public accountant. Alfred has two children. She had her first child age 41 and her second at age 45.

A Bachelor of Science is an undergraduate academic degree awarded for completed courses that generally last three to five years, or a person holding such a degree.

Business administration is administration of a business. It includes all aspects of overseeing and supervising business operations, as well as related fields which include accounting, finance, project management and marketing.

Early career

Alford was employed by Arthur Andersen LLP as an internal auditor in 1993. She worked as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and her roles included providing auditing, business Consulting and financial Due Diligence services. She specialised in manufacturing, consumer products, technology, internet, government and education. Her career at Arthur Andersen LLP spanned 9 years until she left in September 2002. That same month, she moved to eBay. [3]

Arthur Andersen LLP, based in Chicago, was an American holding company. Formerly one of the "Big Five" accounting firms, the firm had provided auditing, tax, and consulting services to large corporations. By 2001, it had become one of the world's largest multinational companies.

Starting September 2002, Andersen worked as a Director of Accounting Policy for two years before moving up to eBay Marketplace Controller in October 2004. Here, she was charged with ensuring accuracy of financials, a role which she served for a year until September 2005. Between October 2005 and March 2009, she was the Chief Financial Officer of eBay's subsidiary, Rent.com. Two years into the position, she was also made the President/General Manager, a position in which she served from March 2007 to May 2011. [3] In total, her career with eBay lasted 9 years.

The chief financial officer (CFO) is the officer of a company that has primary responsibility for managing the company's finances, including financial planning, management of financial risks, record-keeping, and financial reporting. In some sectors, the CFO is also responsible for analysis of data. Some CFOs have the title CFOO for chief financial and operating officer. The CFO typically reports to the chief executive officer (CEO) and the board of directors and may additionally have a seat on the board. The CFO supervises the finance unit and is the chief financial spokesperson for the organization. The CFO directly assists the chief operating officer (COO) on all strategic and tactical matters relating to budget management, cost–benefit analysis, forecasting needs, and securing of new funding.

Move to PayPal

Alford joined PayPal immediately after leaving eBay and her first position was that of Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, North America, Emerging Markets & Business Development, which she began in May 2011. In February 2013, she became the Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, Americas, Global Credit & Global Products, and in May 2016, she was appointed the Chief Operating Officer (COO)- Asia Pacific & Global Head- Cross Border Trade. [3] For a few months during her tenure as COO, she was also the senior vice president and head of HR in the Cross Border Trade division, a role which ended when she left the company in August 2017 after six years with the company. [4]

The chief operating officer (COO), also called the chief operations officer, is one of the highest-ranking executive positions in an organization, comprising part of the "C-Suite". The COO is responsible for the daily operation of the company, and routinely reports to the highest-ranking executive, usually the chief executive officer (CEO).

Upon leaving, PayPal, Alford joined Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and served as the CFO and head of operations. [5] However this position lasted only one year and a half, after which she moved back to PayPal in February 2019. [3] Her new position in PayPal as of April 2019 was senior vice president of core markets. [6]

Board memberships

In addition to serving as an executive manager in various positions in eBay and PayPal, Peggy Alford has also served as a member of the board of directors of two organisations. In March 2018, she was voted to serve in the board of Macerich, a position she still holds as of April 2019. [7] Macerich is a member of the S&P 500, and is fully integrated, self-managed and self-administered real estate investment trust, which focuses on the acquisition, leasing, management, development and redevelopment of regional malls throughout the United States. At 47, she is the youngest serving board member at the company. [8] She is also currently serving as a board member of Social Finance Inc. [9]

Nomination to Facebook board

On 12 April 2019, Facebook announced that it had nominated Peggy Alford to join the company's board of directors at its annual meeting of stockholders to be held on May 30, 2019. If her nomination is confirmed during the election, she is poised to join Mark Zuckerberg; Marc L. Andreessen, Andreessen Horowitz; Erskine B. Bowles, President Emeritus, University of North Carolina; Kenneth I. Chenault, Chairman and Managing Director, General Catalyst; Susan D. Desmond-Hellmann, CEO, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Reed Hastings, Chairman and CEO, Netflix; Sheryl K. Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer, Facebook; Peter A. Thiel, Founders Fund; and Jeffrey D. Zients, CEO, the Cranemere Group. This achievement would also see her become the company's first African-American to be in Facebook's board since the company was founded. [10]
