Pegleg Bennett (born 1969) [1] is a British lifeguard and professional big wave surfer. [2] He also appeared on Survivor 2023 . [3]

Surfing career

Bennett was a strong swimmer as a child, learning to surf at age 17. [1]

He found success in surfing so began competing internationally. [4]

In 2018, Bennett represented England in the Adapted World Championships in La Jolla, placing 6th. [5]

Pegleg Bennett competed in the 2021 AmpSurf ISA World Para Surfing Championships representing England, the highest-level contest for para/adaptive surfing. England went on to place 7th, Pegleg making it to the semi-finals of his division. [6] [7]

Bennett also works as a surfing instructor. [4]

Personal life

Born as Rick Bennett in 1969, Bennett was born without an ankle in his left leg, and as a result it was amputated when he was 13 months old. [1] He went by the nickname Pegleg throughout his childhood, eventually making the decision to make it his legal name in 2016. [8] [9] Bennett resides in St Agnes in Cornwall, England. [2] He is married and has children and grandchildren. [1]

Survivor

In October 2023, Bennett was announced as one of the 18 contestants chosen to compete on Survivor 2023 , [10] missing 3 competitions to compete. [4] He was voted out on day 32, earning 5th place [11] becoming the 7th jury member. He voted for Matthew Haywood to win the season, which he did in a 6–1–1 vote. [12]

Other appearances

In 2018, Pegleg appeared in an episode of George Clarke's Amazing Spaces , living in a van. [5] Pegleg is an ambassador for Dryrobe. [9]

Slater is widely regarded as the greatest professional surfer of all time, and holds 56 Championship Tour victories. He won the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year in four-times. Slater is also the oldest surfer still active on the World Surf League, winning his 8th Billabong Pipeline Masters title at age 49.

Mavericks is a surfing location in northern California outside Pillar Point Harbor, just north of the town of Half Moon Bay at the village of Princeton-by-the-Sea. After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 ft (8 m) and top out at over 60 ft (18 m). Routinely, waves that break can be recorded on seismometers. The break is caused by an unusually shaped underwater rock formation.

Big wave surfing is a discipline within surfing in which experienced surfers paddle into, or are towed into, waves which are at least 20 feet high, on surf boards known as "guns" or towboards. Sizes of the board needed to successfully surf these waves vary by the size of the wave as well as the technique the surfer uses to reach the wave. A larger, longer board allows a rider to paddle fast enough to catch the wave and has the advantage of being more stable, but it also limits maneuverability and surfing speed.

"The Eddie", also known as The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, is a big wave surfing tournament held at Waimea Bay on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The tournament is named for native Hawaiian, champion big wave surfer, and life-saving Waimea Bay lifeguard, Eddie Aikau. Created in 1984 at nearby Sunset Beach, the invitational tournament moved to the notoriously big waved Waimea Bay, where Aikau's family maintains an ancestral tradition as caretakers of the Waimea Valley. It was formerly known as the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau after its sponsor Quiksilver, but the company and the Aikau family could not agree to terms for a new contract after the previous one expired in 2016.

Adventure Parc Snowdonia, formerly Surf Snowdonia was an adventure park and tourist attraction, incorporating an artificial wave pool, at Dolgarrog in the Conwy valley, north Wales, owned by Conwy Adventure Leisure Ltd. It was the world's first commercial artificial surfing lake. The site cost a total of £12 million and opened in August 2015. The park closed in September 2023 following mechanical failures in 2022, which led to the waves being turned off, and searches for financial investment.

Para surfing or adaptive surfing is a form of surfing in which a disabled individual uses a board or waveski to ride on a breaking wave. Competitively, the International Surfing Association (ISA) has hosted the World Para Surfing Championships annually since 2015. In addition, the Association of Adaptive Surfing Professionals (AASP) was formed in 2022 as the international governing body of professional adaptive surfing, and administers the AASP World Tour including events in Hawaii and California for its inaugural year. The Para Surf League (PSL), launched in 2022, organizes amateur and professional contests worldwide.

<i>Survivor</i> (British TV series) series 3 Third series of British television series

Survivor, also known as Survivor 2023 or simply Survivor is the first series of the competitive reality television series Survivor on the BBC. The series was filmed in the Summer of 2023 and began airing in October of the same year. The series began with the 18 contestants being marooned on two remote beaches in the María Trinidad Sánchez Province in the Dominican Republic. Hosted by comedian Joel Dommett, it consisted of 16 episodes following the 34 days of the series, with one contestant being eliminated by a majority vote per episode, and the winner being awarded a grand prize of £100,000.
