Khaw was born on 8 October 1957 in Singapore. His father, Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh, was a cabinet member of Tunku Abdul Rahman. His family moved back to Malaysia soon after, and he studied at Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur before leaving for the UK. [2]
Khaw studied medicine at Southampton University Medical School and qualified in 1980. He subsequently joined Moorfields in 1987 and specialised in adult and paediatric glaucoma (1989-1994), simultaneously preparing for his PhD in "ocular wound healing and advanced therapies to prevent scarring". He has perhaps the greatest experience in his field in the United Kingdom and he has developed techniques for glaucoma surgery that are now in worldwide use. [1]
Khaw is Director of the National Institute of Health's Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields, and University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology. [1] He has raised more than £120 million for research and buildings including funding for the world's largest Children's Eye Hospital and translational research clinical centre. [1]

Sohan Singh Hayreh was an ophthalmologist, clinical scientist, and professor emeritus of ophthalmology at the University of Iowa. As one of the pioneers in the field of fluorescein angiography, he was generally acknowledged to be a leading authority in vascular diseases of the eye and the optic nerve. For over 60 years, Hayreh was actively involved in basic, experimental, and clinical research in ophthalmology, publishing over 400 original peer-reviewed articles in various international ophthalmic journals, six classical monographs and books in his field of research, and more than 50 chapters in ophthalmic books. He made many seminal observations dealing with the ocular circulation in health and disease, the optic disc and the optic nerve, retinal and choroidal vascular disorders, glaucomatous optic neuropathy, fundus changes in malignant arterial hypertension, ocular neovascularization, rheumatologic disorders of the eye, and nocturnal arterial hypotension. He was an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences.

He is known to be the first surgeon to perform a Radial keratotomy in India and is credited with the development of the first soft eye implant in the world, and the Keiki Mehta BP Valve Glaucoma Shunt, a medical implant used in the treatment of neovascular‚ congenital and uveitic glaucoma. He is a recipient of several honours including the Grand Honors Award of the National Eye Research Foundation, Chicago and the Triple Ribbon Award of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
