The Penzance Open [1] tournament was originally called the Penzance LTC Tournament [2] as a combined grass court tennis tournament staged at by the Penzance LTC,Penzance, Cornwall, England in 1881, that ran until 1887. [3]

In 1950 the Penzance Open was established as a senior international tour level event that ran until 1978. [3] The Penzance Open is still being staged today as a local tournament.

History

On 15 August 1881 the Penzance LTC Tournament was held for the first time at Penzance, Cornwall, England as a tennis event for men only that ended on 16 August. [3] The first edition was won by a Mr. P. H. Fernandez. [3] On 11 August 1882 the second edition of the tournament was concluded, [4] the men's singles event was won by Arthur Stanhope Rashleigh, [3] and the women's singles was won by a Miss M. Jackson. [5]

The first Penzance LTC Tournament was staged up to 1887, when both the club and event ended the with men's event being won by the American player A. K. Andrews. [3] In the summer of 1950 saw the first Penzance Open Tournament was staged by the new Penzance Lawn Tennis Club at Penlee Park, Penzance, Cornwall. [6] Former winners of the men's singles title include; the Polish player Ernest Whittmann [7] (1953–1954), Roger Taylor (1959), The women's singles title has been won by Joan Curry (1955), Billie Woodgate (1957–1958), a Wimbledon quarter finalist in the women's doubles, and mixed doubles events. Venue

In 1947 a new Penzance Lawn Tennis Club was established at the promenade, Penzance and consisted of 2 hard courts. In 1950 Penzance LTC moved to a permanent location at Penlee Park. The club then consisted of 4 ‘En Tout Cas’ shale courts, plus 2 existing grass courts. [9] Today the club has 4 floodlit artificial grass courts and 3 floodlit macadam hard courts. [10]

The Manchester Open previously known as the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships, the Northern Championships, the Northern Tennis Tournament and the Manchester Trophy was a grass court tennis tournament on the ATP Tour held at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club, in the Didsbury suburb of Manchester, Great Britain. The tournament had been held annually from 1880 to 2009.

Tennis Wales (Welsh: Tennis Cymru) is the national governing body for tennis in Wales. It is part of the British tennis governing body, the Lawn Tennis Association. It was founded as the Welsh Lawn Tennis Association (WLTA) in 1887.

The 1881 men's tennis season was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 73 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The 1882 men's tennis season was composed of the seventh annual tennis season and now incorporated 72 events. The Wimbledon Championships and Irish Championships was won by William Renshaw, the U.S. National Championships was won by Richard Sears collecting his second title other big winners were Richard Taswell Richardson picking up the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships and Ernest Renshaw winning the Princes Club Championships, The title leader this season was Robert W. Braddell winning 4 tournaments from 6 finals.

The County Kildare Open Tennis Championship, originally known as the County Kildare Tennis Tournament (1879–1880), then County Kildare Championship, is grass court tennis tournament held initially at Naas, County Kildare, in Ireland, established on 2 August 1881.

The 2022 Wimbledon Championships was a Grand Slam tier tennis tournament that took place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. Novak Djokovic successfully defended his gentlemen's singles title to claim his 21st major title, defeating Nick Kyrgios in the final. Ashleigh Barty was the reigning ladies' champion, but did not defend her title after retiring from professional tennis in March 2022. The ladies' singles title was won by Elena Rybakina, who defeated Ons Jabeur in the final.

The St George's Hill Open tournament was founded as the St George's Hill Tournament a men's grass court tennis tournament staged at St Georges Hill Weybridge, Surrey, England in 1881, that ran until 1883, and was not held again. In 1913 the St Georges Hill Lawn Tennis Club was established. In 1922 St Georges Hill LTC started a combined men's and women's tournament the St George's Hill Open this ran as a senior tennis tour event until 1966.

The North of Ireland Championships was an early Victorian period men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1879. The championship was played at the Cliftonville Cricket Club, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland. The tournament ran annually for fifteen editions until 1894. It was the precursor tournament to the later Ulster Grass Court Championships.

The Championship of the Esher LTC. also known as the Championship of Esher was an early Victorian period men's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1877. The championship was played at the Esher Lawn Tennis Club, Esher, Surrey, England. The championship ran annually for seven editions until 1883.

The North Northamptonshire LTC Tournament. also known simply as the North Northamptonshire LTC was a brief Victorian era men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1880. It was organised by the North Northamptonshire Lawn Tennis Club who held the event at different locations in North Northamptonshire, England. The tournament ran annually for four editions only until 1883.

The East of England Championships also called the East of England Lawn Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Felixstowe Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1889 the event had by this time become a regional level tournament that ran until 1983 when it lost its status as a senior international tour level event. However the championships are still being staged today as the East of England and an LTA British Tour.

The Liverpool Cricket Club Lawn Tennis Tournament. was an early Victorian era men's grass court tennis tournament first staged in June 1881 at the Liverpool Cricket Club, Aigburth Cricket Ground, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. The inaugural men's singles event was won by Richard Taswell Richardson a two time Wimbledon finalist. It was staged only three times until 1883.

The Victoria Park Lawn Tennis Tournament also called the Victoria Park LTC Tournament was an early Victorian era men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first staged in June 1881 at the Victoria Park Lawn Tennis Club, Exeter, Devon, England. It was staged only four times until 1884.

The Alliance LTC Championship was a late Victorian period men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1881. It was organised by the Alliance Lawn Tennis Club and held at Crouch End Hill, Crouch End, London, England. The championship was staged for three editions only until 1885.

1880 Women's Tennis season was mainly composed of national, regional, county, local regular amateur tournaments. This year, 13 tennis events for women were staged, one in India, three of them in Ireland and nine events in England between May and October 1880.

The Bedford Open also known as the Bedford Lawn Tennis Open Tournament was men's and women's grass court tennis tournament established in 1880 as the Bedfordshire LTC Tournament. It was held at the Bedford Lawn Tennis Club, Bedford, Berkshire, England and ran through until 1974 when it was abolished.

The Duffield Open was men's and women's grass court tournament founded in 1882 as the Duffield LTC Open Tournament. The tournament was held at Duffield Lawn Tennis Club, Duffield, Derbyshire, England until 1960.
