The first written records in the history of Dominica began in November 1493, when Christopher Columbus spotted the island. Prior to European contact, Dominica was inhabited by the Arawak. Dominica was a French colony from 1715 until the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, and then became a British colony from 1763 to 1978. It became an independent nation in 1978.
The politics of Dominica takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Dominica is the head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the House of Assembly. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.

The Dominica United People's Party was a political party in Dominica. It first contested elections in 1961, when it finished second behind the Dominica Labour Party and won four of the eleven seats with 25.6% of the vote. In the 1966 elections it increased its share of the vote to 32.2%, but won only a single seat. It did not contest the next elections in 1970 then the Dominica Freedom Party became the main opposition party.
The Dominica Democratic Labour Party was a political party in Dominica created by a split of the Dominica Labour Party in 1979. It was lead by Oliver Seraphin. It contested the 1980 general elections, finishing second behind the Dominica Freedom Party with 19.7% of the vote and two of the 21 seats. The party merged with Dominica Labour Party in 1983. It did not contest any subsequent elections.
The Dominica Liberation Movement Alliance was a political party in Dominica. It contested the 1980 general elections, receiving 8.4% of the vote but failing to win a seat. It did not contest any subsequent elections. The party merged with Dominica Labour Party in 1985.

The Dominica Progressive Party was a minor political party in Dominica. It contested the 1985 general elections under the name Dominica Progressive Force, receiving only 78 votes (0.2%) and failing to win a seat. It changed its name prior to the 1990 elections, but received only 74 votes (0.2%) and again failed to win a seat. Although it did not participate in the elections in 1995 and 2000, it returned for the 2005 elections in which it put forward three candidates but failed to win a seat. In the 2009 elections it received only 24 votes.
General elections were held in Dominica on 8 December 2014 to elect the 21 members of the House of Assembly. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced the election date on 5 November 2014 and Nomination Day was held on 19 November. Under Dominica's electoral system, the Prime Minister has the authority to call elections at any time and is only required to give a minimum of twenty-five days' notice.
Lennox Irving Linton is a Dominican politician in the United Workers' Party (UWP). He was first elected as the Representative for the Marigot constituency in the House of Assembly of Dominica on 8 December 2014. He served as Leader of the Opposition from 22 December 2014 until the 6 December 2022 snap general election and as Leader of UWP from 1st September 2013 until his resignation on 3 October 2022. He currently serves as President of the United Worker’s Party. He is a former journalist, radio presenter, party leader and corporate executive.

Kenneth Melchoir Darroux is a Dominican politician and doctor. He is currently serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs since 17 December 2019 in Dominica. Prior to his appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister he was the Minister for Health and Social Services in the government of Roosevelt Skerrit. He is a member of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP).
