Per Bertil Sundberg (born 2 April 1964) is a Swedish ceramic and glass artist. Until 2005 he worked at Orrefors glassworks, and has subsequently been a professor at Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) and an independent artist. [1] [2]
Sundberg studied at Capellagården and Konstfack. In 2004, he held a solo exhibition at the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, called “Greatest Hits 1983-2004”. [3] In 2005 he received the first Form scholarship from the Swedish Visual Arts Fund. [4] In summer 2011, a solo exhibition was dedicated to his pottery at the Gustavsberg Art Gallery in Stockholm. [5] In November 2014, Sundberg was awarded the Swedish Visual Arts Fund Scholarship. [6]
A starting point in much of Sundberg’s artwork is nature. Animals and plants are present in often unexpected juxtapositions; sometimes humorously created, sometimes more thoughtfully. In his glasswork, Sundberg often uses inset images in the form of decals from the old Gustavsberg porcelain factory and with properties to withstand high temperatures. [7] The inset images contrast with one another, creating tension in the work. Sundberg also uses decals in his ceramic art, as well as ceramic figurines from flea markets. Unexpected encounters between sculpted nature and combinations of figurines take place. In some works, both in glass and ceramics, Sundberg discusses the concept of function. [8] Is a special function associated with a particular shape? is one of the questions he investigates. Common to Sundberg’s oeuvre is the sculptural expression, which from around 2011 has become even more articulated. [9]
Per B. Sundberg grew up in Huddinge, south of Stockholm, where he early showed interest in creative expression, including in textile. [10] Sundberg applied and was accepted to the pottery division at Capellagården in Vickleby 1983-85. In the years 1985-1992 he studied glass and ceramics at Konstfack in Stockholm, with a break in 1988 to study at the Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle. [11]
After completing his studies Per B. Sundberg established himself as glass and ceramic artist. He creates mostly unique art objects or public art, since 2005 full-time in his own studio in Gustavsberg. [12] After training at Konstfack, he and some fellow students established a glass studio on the islets Fjäderholmarna, at the inlet to Stockholm. Here Sundberg blew glass, inter alia together with his colleagues Gunilla Kihlgren and Mårten Medbo. During the years 1994-2005, Per B. Sundberg was an employee at Orrefors glassworks. His glass art also attracted international attention and purchases, including by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. During his time at Orrefors glassworks, Sundberg developed new glass techniques. The Fabula technique is based on Orrefors classic graal technique. Heat-resistant decals are pasted on a cylindrical glass blank. [13] The glass blank is heated, overlaid with clear glass and blown to the desired basic shape. Still hot, the object is then formed using metal tools. Artistic themes are flora and fauna, as well as celebrities. The Litograal technique is similar, in which the decals are replaced with black and white copies from comic books, often of a sexual nature. Sometimes Sundberg makes the glass surface opaque and polishes windows into the subject. [14] In connection with the transfer of ownership of the Orrefors Kosta Boda glassworks in 2005, Sundberg left Orrefors and was hired as a professor at the Konstfack Department of Design, Crafts and Arts. In parallel with the work at Konstfack, Sundberg has worked in his own studio at the old premises of the Gustavsberg porcelain factory. When operations ceased at the factory, a number of independent artists moved into the premises, including Sundberg. An important element in Sundberg’s artistic process is to use materials that others have left: clays, glazes, decals and figurines. These then form the palette of his creativity. [15] [16] Sundberg is constantly looking for new expressions and to test the limits of materials. In the studio, he has developed new ceramic materials, including clays and glazes from the old factory. Sundberg combines figurines, found at flea markets, with a self-constructed foundation. A number of firings with different glazes follows. Glazes are thus part of the sculpted expression. [17]

Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, is a university college for higher education in the area of art, crafts and design in Stockholm, Sweden.

Orrefors is a locality situated in southern Sweden and part of Nybro Municipality, Kalmar County, with 719 inhabitants in 2010. The township belongs to Hälleberga parish and is primarily famous for its glassworks with the same name. Orrefors is part of the province Småland and the area known as Kingdom of Crystal. The area is famous for its glassworks and include the municipalities of Emmaboda, Nybro, Uppvidinge, Växjö and Lessebo in southern Sweden. Orrefors glasswork is one of the most notable with the adjacent National School of Glass and Kosta Boda.
Victor Emanuel Lindstrand, known as Vicke Lindstrand was a Swedish glass designer, textile and ceramic designer, and painter. He is considered a pioneer of Swedish glass art. His work was part of the art competitions at the 1932 Summer Olympics and the 1936 Summer Olympics.
Christian Pontus Andersson is a Swedish artist and sculptor, living in Södermalm, Stockholm.
A ceramics museum is a museum wholly or largely devoted to ceramics, usually ceramic art. Its collections may also include glass and enamel, but typically concentrate on pottery, including porcelain. Most national collections are in a more general museum covering all of the arts, or just the decorative arts. However, there are a number of specialized ceramics museums, with some focusing on the ceramics of just one country, region or manufacturer. Others have international collections, which may be centered on ceramics from Europe or East Asia or have a more global emphasis.

Orrefors Glassworks is a glassworks in the Swedish village Orrefors in Småland. Orrefors manufactured crystal glassware and art glass. The range consisted of crystal stemware, barware, vases, and sculptures and lighting products in crystal. The glassworks in Orrefors closed in 2012.
Björn Ekegren, is a Swedish sculptor, glass artist and painter who primarily works with sand cast glass art.
Sara Maria Danius was a Swedish literary critic and philosopher, and a scholar of literature and aesthetics. Danius was professor of aesthetics at Södertörn University, docent of literature at Uppsala University and professor in literary science at Stockholm University.
Sara Kristoffersson was born in Stockholm 1972 and is a Swedish writer and professor of design history and theory at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. She is the author of several exhibition catalogue essays and has published a number of articles on various aspects of design, architecture and popular culture.
Karin Signhild Hermansson, better known as Kakan Hermansson, is a Swedish television presenter, radio host, comedian and artist. She has had her own television show on Sveriges Television (SVT) called Kaka på Kaka and has worked on shows for both Sveriges Radio and TV4. A graduate of the Stockholm art academy Konstfack, she works with a feminist art collective and has exhibited her art in various places. She calls herself a radical feminist and anarchist.
Suck-Woo Park, also known as Suku Park, is a South Korean contemporary ceramic artist and a council member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC).
Johanna Rytkölä is a Finnish sculptor who works in stoneware ceramics. She studied at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland, receiving a Master of Arts degree in the Department of Art Education in 1982, and in 1986, a Master of Arts degree in the Department of Ceramics and Glass Design. The University of Art and Design became part of the Aalto University in 2010. She received the state artist grant for a five-year period in 2008 and for one year in 2015. She lives and works in the city of Vantaa in her studio house renovated from a former grocery store building.
Edit Gunilla Margareta Lagerbielke (1926–2013) was a Swedish textile artist who exerted considerable influence on arts and crafts in Sweden as a result of her heading Konstfack and chairing the Swedish Arts Grants Committee. She is also remembered for the textile works she created with her husband Lars Johanson which were exhibited in Gothenburg in 1970.
Jennifer Elizabeth Lee is a Scottish ceramic artist with an international reputation. Lee's distinctive pots are hand built using traditional pinch and coil methods. She has developed a method of colouring the pots by mixing metallic oxides into the clay before making. Her work is held in over forty museums and public collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2018 Lee won the Loewe Craft Prize, an award initiated by Jonathan Anderson in 2017. The prize was presented to her at an awards ceremony at The Design Museum in London.
Eva Henriette Jancke-Björk (1882–1981) was a Swedish ceramist, painter and textile artist. She became a prominent porcelain designer, working for Rörstrand, S:t Eriks Lervarufabriker and Bo fajans before establishing her own business in Mölndal near Gothenburg. She produced simply designed bowls, flower pots and tableware, both decorated and monochrome. Jancke-Björk also painted watercolours, created textile patterns and worked with glassware. Her works are in the collections of the Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts and the Röhsska Museum.
Maria Benktzon is a Swedish designer, she is known for industrial design with human factors. She is a co-founder of Ergonomi Design Gruppen which later became Veryday, an industrial design consultancy located in Stockholm. The company aimed to design improved everyday objects for the home and work. In November 2016, Veryday joined forces with McKinsey & Company, and today operates under the name "McKinsey Design."
Beata Mårtensson-Brummer was a Swedish painter, ceramist, art teacher and philanthropist. After studying in Stockholm, France and Italy, from 1908 she worked at the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory where she designed glazed vases and pottery. She taught painting at the Högre konstindustriella skolan where she was appointed head teacher in 1915. In 1911, she married the Hungarian-born sculptor Joseph Brummer. After first helping him to run his gallery in Paris, in 1920 she joined him in New York where he ran the Brummer Gallery in Manhattan until his death in 1947. Mårtensson-Brummer returned to Sweden in 1953. On her death in 1956, she bequeathed considerable amounts of funding to Sweden's cultural institutions.
