Pere de Coma was a medieval architect who died in the 13th century, the introducer of Romanesque in the Catalan city of Lleida.

His background is nowadays unknown. However, it was suggested by scholars such as Roca Florejachs (1911) that his origins lay in Lombardy, [1] while other scholars (Lladonosa. 1970 [2] ) hint at northern Catalan comarques such as Ribagorça or Solsonès. He's known to have established in Lleida by 1180, when he acquired property in the Sant Joan quarter of the city. In 1193 he asked Gombau de Camporrells, bishop of Lleida, for permission to work in the Seu Vella as a master builder. In 1203 he was hired to direct the construction of this cathedral, where he worked for almost twenty years. He built it on top of the mosque which had been in use during the time Lleida had belonged to Al Andalus. [3] and a former, smaller Christian church. There is some scholarly dispute on whether De Coma had been hired to make the former church into a larger temple (Lladonosa, 1970 [4] ) or to design a brand new one (Lacoste, 1975 [5] ).

Pere de Coma's work in the Seu Vella was complemented by that of members of the so-called Lleida school of eclectic Romanesque architecture, who were of Moorish origin, and were in charge of most of the cathedral's decoration. Pere de Coma's main structure for the Seu Vella was kept at all times, including in the following century when Gothic elements were added everywhere. He was succeeded in the direction of works by a relative, one Berenguer de Coma, who was granted a statica domorum from the late Pere. [6]

He died at Lleida.

Church of Sant Llorenç, Lleida

Sant Llorenç is a Romanesque church in Lleida dating from the late 12th century, with Gothic additions from the 15th century. The initial architects of the church were Pere de Coma, the master of works who in charge of La Seu Vella, the old cathedral of Lleida. It has a nave and two aisles, built with the same height, and three apses; the nave is in the Romanesque style, whereas the aisles are Gothic, as is the octagonal bell tower. In 2002 part of the church was refurbished.

Spanish Romanesque

Spanish Romanesque designates the Romanesque art developed in the Hispanic-Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula in the 11th and 12th centuries. Its stylistic features are essentially common to the European Romanesque although it developed particular characteristics in the different regions of the peninsula. There is no Romanesque art in the southern half of the peninsula because it remained under Muslim rule (Al-Andalus). The examples of Romanesque buildings in the central area of the peninsula are sparse and of the latest period, with virtually no presence south of the Ebro and the Tagus. Most Romanesque buildings can be found in the northern third of the peninsula. Romanesque art was introduced into the peninsula from east to west, so scholars have usually defined regional characteristics accordingly: the "eastern kingdoms" comprising the Pyrenean areas, Catalan Romanesque, Aragonese Romanesque and Navarrese Romanesque, and the "western kingdoms" comprising Castilian-Leonese Romanesque, Asturian Romanesque, Galician Romanesque and Portuguese Romanesque.
