Peter Betham (born 6 January 1989) is a professional rugby union player for the Provence in the ProD2. He was a representative player for Australia in international rugby matches. His usual position is wing or fullback. [1]
Betham was born in Wellington, New Zealand to parents of Samoan heritage. His family moved to Australia and he was brought up in Sydney where he started playing rugby league with the Coogee Randwick Wombats club at the age of 10. [2] He played high school rugby for St. Joseph's College, Hunters Hill located on Sydney's Lower North Shore. [3] He became friends with St. Joseph's teammate Kurtley Beale and for two years the pair backed up with Kensington in the South Sydney junior rugby league competition. [4] Having attended a public primary school, Peter represented Sydney East PSSA at the State Championships in 2001 at Kiama. His teammate Rob Horne and Peter went on to represent NSW PSSA that year.
Betham played for NSW Schools in the 2005 National U16 Championship. He subsequently played for the Australia A Schools team that went on to beat New Zealand. In 2006 Betham toured Fiji and New Zealand with the Australian Schoolboys team. [5]
In 2007 he played rugby while studying American history at Sydney University, [4] he played rugby for Wesley College and was selected in the Australian U19 Rugby World Championship squad. [6] He also became a holder of an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship, one of 26. [7] [8]
Betham played for the Brumbies in the Super 14 competition, [9] [10] but injuries kept him off the field until mid 2009 when he rejoined Sydney University [11] where he helped the club win the Sydney competition that year. [12]
In 2010 he continued to play for Sydney Uni, and trained with the Waratahs' squad, as an "unsigned winger" [13] and played in several Tahs' pre-season games. [14] [15]
In March 2010 Betham signed with the Melbourne Rebels for the 2011 Super Rugby season, [16] with Rebels assistant coach Damian Hill describing him as "one of the most dynamic and athletic young backs" in Australian rugby. [9]
He spent 2011 in Victoria before returning to NSW. In February 2012 Betham was named to play on the wing in the Tahs' pre-season match against Tonga. [17]
In April 2015 Betham signed for Leicester Tigers. He will join them after the 2015 Super Rugby season finishes mid-2015. [18] Betham marked his Tigers' debut with a try in their opening win of the season over London Irish in October 2015. The tigers have used Betham in both the outside centre role and on the wing.
In January 2017 Betham signed a new contract to stay at the club. [19] In May 2017 Betham signed a contract with Clermont Auvergne for two years. [20]
On 11 March 2021, Betham would leave Clermont to sign for Pro D2 side Provence ahead of the 2021-22 season. [21]
The New South Wales Waratahs, referred to as the Waratahs, are an Australian professional rugby union team representing the majority of New South Wales in the Super Rugby competition. The Riverina and other southern parts of the state, are represented by the Brumbies, who are based in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
Drew Alan Mitchell is a former Australian rugby union professional player. He played on the wing or as fullback. Up to the 2006 season he played for the Queensland Reds. He played for the Western Force for the 2007–09 Super 14 seasons. From 2010 to 2013 he played for the New South Wales Waratahs. Since 2013 he has played for RC Toulon. He made his debut for Australia in 2005 and is Australia's highest try scorer in World Cup history.
Adam Freier is a rugby union footballer. In 2011 and 2012 he played for the Rebels in the Super Rugby competition, and retired at the end of 2012 from professional rugby. In 2015 he came out of retirement to play Shute Shield for Randwick until this day. His usual playing position is hooker.
Lote Daulako Tuqiri is a former professional dual-code rugby footballer who primarily played as a winger across both codes. He represented Australia in both rugby league and rugby union, and Fiji in rugby league. Tuqiri first rose to prominence as a professional rugby league footballer for the Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Maroons, as well as the Fiji and Australia national sides. He was therefore a high-profile signing for rugby union in 2002, winning 67 caps for Australia and being a part of their 2003 and 2007 World Cup squads. He played rugby union for the Waratahs in the Super 14 and Leicester Tigers in England in season 2009–10. Tuqiri's contract with the Australian Rugby Union was terminated on 1 July 2009. No immediate reason was given, and Tuqiri returned to rugby league in 2010, playing for the Wests Tigers of the NRL. In September 2013, he signed a short-term contract with Irish rugby union giants, Leinster to play in the Pro12 in a three-month deal. Just 6 weeks out from the 2014 NRL season, Tuqiri signed with his third NRL club, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, on a one-year deal.
Seremaia Baïkeinuku is a retired Fijian rugby union player who played most recently for Leicester Tigers in the Aviva Premiership, and represented Fiji at a National level. He plays at both Fly-half and Inside Centre.
Kurtley James Beale is an Australian professional rugby union representative player who has made over 90 national representative appearances in a ten-year playing career at the world-class level. He is of Aboriginal descent, has had a long Super Rugby career with the New South Wales Waratahs and has played for the Melbourne Rebels and the Wasps club in England. Beale usually plays at full-back or centre but can play fly-half or winger. In 2011 Beale received the John Eales Medal, awarded to Australian rugby's Player of the Year.
Benjamin Kayser is a French former rugby union player. He most recently played at hooker for Clermont Auvergne in the French Top 14.
Nemani Nadolo is a Fijian-Australian rugby union player. He currently plays for New South Wales Waratahs in Super Rugby, usually as a wing or centre, and the Fiji national team.
