Philip Albert Talmadge (born April 23,1952) [1] is an American politician,attorney,and jurist,who is currently a partner at the Seattle,Washington law firm Talmadge/Fitzpatrick. [2] Talmadge graduated from Yale University and received a J.D. from the University of Washington. From 1979 to 1995 he represented West Seattle in the Washington State Senate,earning a reputation as a liberal reformer. [3] After leaving the legislature,Talmadge served a single six-year term on the Supreme Court of Washington. [4] In 2004 he was a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for Governor of Washington,but withdrew from the race in the face of lackluster polling and personal health problems. [5]

The U.S. state of Washington enforced capital punishment until the state's capital punishment statute was declared null and void and abolished in practice by a state Supreme Court ruling on October 11,2018. The court ruled that it was unconstitutional as applied due to racial bias however it did not render the wider institution of capital punishment unconstitutional and rather required the statute to be amended to eliminate racial biases. From 1904 to 2010,78 people were executed by the state;the last was Cal Coburn Brown on September 10,2010. In April 2023,Governor Jay Inslee signed SB5087 which formally abolished capital punishment in Washington State and removed provisions for capital punishment from state law.

Herman Eugene Talmadge was an American politician who served as governor of Georgia in 1947 and from 1948 to 1955 and as a U.S. senator from Georgia from 1957 to 1981. A Democrat,Talmadge served during a time of political transition,both in Georgia and nationally. He began his career as a staunch segregationist known for his opposition to civil rights,ordering schools to be closed rather than desegregated. But by the later stages of his career,following the enactment of the Voting Rights Act,which gave substance to the Fifteenth Amendment enacted nearly one hundred years before,Talmadge,like many other Southern politicians of that period,had modified his views. His life eventually encapsulated the emergence of his native Georgia from entrenched white supremacy into a political culture where white voters regularly elect black members of Congress.

The Moxie Media scandal was a 2010 political scandal in Washington state. In that year's state senate primary elections,small political consulting firm Moxie Media engaged in astroturfing that resulted in a surprise loss for incumbent Jean Berkey. In an out-of-court settlement,the state fined Moxie $290,000,but the scandal had no negative long-term consequences for them. Winner Nick Harper stated he knew nothing about the scheme and became state senator despite efforts to delay his swearing in. Though the state's Democratic Party recognized Harper's achievements,rumors of an extramarital affair dogged him,and he resigned in late 2013.

The 2021 Seattle City Attorney election was held on November 2,2021. Incumbent City Attorney Pete Holmes sought reelection to a fourth term in office,but came third place in the officially nonpartisan August 3 primary election and failed to advance to the general election,with both Nicole Thomas-Kennedy and Ann Davison finishing ahead of Holmes in the primary. Davison defeated Thomas-Kennedy in the general election.
