Maskandi is a form of Zulu folk music, originally associated with migrant workers, that is evolving with South African society. Thought to be pioneered by Phuzushukela. Often characterised by a picking guitar style which draws on a variety of historical influences it also has an important social function with players being given sanction to publicly criticise powerful people.
The Zulu people are a South African ethnic group. Many Zulu musicians have become a major part of South African music, creating a huge influence in the music industry. A number of Zulu-folk derived styles have become well known across South Africa and abroad. The South African Music Awards are the Recording Industry of South Africa's music industry awards, established in 1995. The ceremony is held annually, usually in late April or May, with the judging process starting in November of the previous year. The nominations are typically announced at the end of March. The winners receive a gold-plated statuette called a SAMA.

Izingane Zoma are a Maskandi group from Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa formed in 1993. Their politically inspired songs have attracted wide discussion and chart success in their home country. This vocal trio has enjoyed a string of gold and platinum-level record sales in the South African market. The group were SATMA nominees in 2011, in the category of Best Video.
Bhekumuzi Luthuli was a well known South African Maskandi musician. Born in Kwa-Maphumulo, near the Kwa-Zulu Natal town of Stanger, he started making traditional Zulu music on a home-made guitar. In the early 1980s, he joined the Mbaqanga band Oshimi, based in Durban. After two albums with the group, Luthuli embarked on a successful solo career. His second and third solo releases, Unembeza and Wongikhonzela Enhliziyweni, won OKTV awards, and were followed by another 17 albums. Impempe attained platinum status, selling over 50,000 copies.
Thokozani Langa is a Maskandi musician from Mahlabathini, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.
The South African Traditional Music Awards are an annual award ceremony. SATMA Awards are about celebrating music made in the style of the people and various language groups of South Africa. Founded by Dumisani Goba, The awards aim to "eliminate tribalism and other divisive measures"; the official slogan is "My Culture, Your Culture, One Nation".
Shiyani Ngcobo was a Maskandi guitarist and teacher from South Africa. He toured Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom during the early 2000s in support of his album Introducing Shiyani Ngcobo becoming a major influence in taking Maskanda music to international audiences. In addition, he taught maskandi guitar at the School of Music of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He died near Durban on 18 February 2011.
Phumlani Mgobhozi is a Maskanda artist from Umkomaas, South Africa. He started his professional career as a Gospel singer in 2001. He released five gospel albums between 2002 and 2011, before being encouraged to try his hand at Maskandi.
Simphiwe Majobe Nhlangulela, better known by her stage name Simmy, is a South African singer-songwriter.
Mfaz’ Omnyama (1959–2001) was a South African performer of Maskandi music, guitar player, and lyricist.
Blaq Diamond is a South African Afro pop duo from Ladysmith KwaZulu-Natal. They met in 2010 on a school trip where both participated in a music cypher in the school bus. They signed to record label Ambitiouz Entertainment, releasing their debut album Inqola (2017), which became their first iTunes number one.
Siyabonga Nene, known professionally as Big Zulu, is a South African rapper and songwriter. He rose to spotlight after releasing the single "Donsa Nkabi" in 2016.
Mnqobi Yazo is a South African singer-songwriter. Born in kwaMaphumulo, and raised in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, released his first project Iscephu in 2018. After he signed a record deal with Mabala Noise, his debut album Impi (2020), which incorporated elements of African trap, Afro-pop, and maskandi, was certified platinum in South Africa.
Tugela Fairy (Made of Stars) is the second studio album by South African singer and songwriter Simmy, released on 6 November 2020, through EL World Music and Sony.
Shwi no Mtekhala is a South African maskandi duo formed in late 1990's. The group was composed of Mandla Xaba and Zwelenduna Rodgers Magubane.
Khuzani Nkosikhona Innocent Mpungose professionally known as Khuzani is a South African maskandi singer. Born and raised in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, he rose to prominence after participating on Mgqumeni's album iSecret 2009.
