Pi Nu Epsilon (ΠΝΕ) is an honor society for university students in musical performing arts organizations.

Honor society rank organization that recognizes excellence among peers

In the United States, an honor society is a rank organization that recognizes excellence among peers. Numerous societies recognize various fields and circumstances. The Order of the Arrow, for example, is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. Chiefly, the term refers to scholastic honor societies, those that recognize students who excel academically or as leaders among their peers, often within a specific academic discipline.

Performing arts art forms in which artists use their body or voice to convey artistic expression

Performing arts are a form of art in which artists use their voices, bodies or inanimate objects to convey artistic expression. It is different from visual arts, which is when artists use paint, canvas or various materials to create physical or static art objects. Performing arts include a range of disciplines which are performed in front of a live audience.

The purpose of Pi Nu Epsilon is threefold:

History

Pi Nu Epsilon was founded at Armour Institute of Technology in January 1927 for the purpose of "giving recognition to those men and women who had unselfishly devoted their time and energies to the furtherance of good music". [2] Only the second non-engineering honor society at Armor Tech, Pi Nu Epsilon was founded by four members of the class of 1927, four members of the class of 1928, and Professor Emeritus Charles Wilbur Leigh.

Pi Nu Epsilon aided the musical organizations at the Alpha chapter by sponsoring and promoting the musical activities on campus. It thrived for many years under the guidance of Dr. O. Gordon Erickson, who served as Music Director at Armour Institute of Technology from 1932 until his death in August 1953. In 1940, Armour Institute of Technology and Lewis Institute merged to form the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Illinois Institute of Technology is a private research university in Chicago, Illinois. It was established from the merger in 1940 of Armour Institute and Lewis Institute. The university has programs in engineering, science, psychology, architecture, business, communications, industrial technology, information technology, design and law. It traces its history to several 19th-century engineering and professional education institutions in the United States. The Institute of Design, Chicago-Kent College of Law, and Midwest College of Engineering were also merged into it.

Pi Nu Epsilon was formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the state of Illinois on May 16, 1947, by DeWitt H. Pickens, John G. Seeger Jr., Hans H. Nord, and James W. Leichti. Later that month, on May 28, 1947, the Beta Chapter was founded at Drexel Institute of Technology. Gamma Chapter (later renamed Epsilon) was founded on April 30, 1955 at Ursinus College. Delta Chapter was founded on May 12, 1956, at Shippensburg University. [3] Finally, Zeta Chapter was founded on April 15, 1989, at Millersville University in Millersville, PA.

Sigma Psi Zeta

Sigma Psi Zeta (ΣΨΖ) Sorority, Inc. is a progressive multicultural sorority It was founded on March 23, 1994 at the University at Albany and incorporated in New York on March 15, 1996 by the 10 Founding Mothers. The sorority's colors are red and gold and its flower is a yellow rose with baby's breath. It is a part of the National APIA Panhellenic Association (NAPA).

Chi Upsilon Sigma (ΧΥΣ) — official name is Corazones Unidos Siempre Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. — is a Latina oriented Greek letter intercollegiate sorority. Chi Upsilon Sigma was founded on April 29, 1980, by seven Latinas at the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Theta Nu Epsilon

Theta Nu Epsilon is a sophomore class society. Founded at Wesleyan University in 1870 as a chapter of Skull and Bones, the society accepts members regardless of their fraternity status.

Chi Epsilon (ΧΕ) is an American civil engineering honor society. It honors engineering students in the United States who have exemplified the "principles of scholarship, character, practicality, and sociability...in the civil engineering profession." There are currently 141 chapters, of which 132 are active, where over 120,000 members have been inducted. Chi Epsilon is a 501c(3) non-profit organization, with Platinum Certification by www.guidestar.org.

Kappa Beta Gamma

Kappa Beta Gamma (ΚΒΓ) is a sorority founded at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1917.

Alpha Sigma Nu (ΑΣΝ) is the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities. ΑΣΝ is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. It was founded in 1915 at Marquette University, as Alpha Sigma Tau and was renamed Alpha Sigma Nu in 1930. It is open to both men and women of every academic discipline in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and other Jesuit higher education institutions worldwide. It is present in 28 Jesuit institutions of higher education in the United States, Campion College and Regis College in Canada, Loyola Andalucia in Spain, and Sogang University in South Korea. Alpha Sigma Nu's membership is around 80,000 members and around 2,000 members are inducted each year.


Gamma Epsilon Tau is a co-ed American collegiate honors fraternity for graphic artists. As of 2013 the fraternity has eight active chapters, with the national chapter located at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.

Delta Epsilon Psi

Delta Epsilon Psi (ΔΕΨ) is a South Asian interest social and service fraternity located in the United States. Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on October 1, 1998 at the University of Texas at Austin. The 18 founders formed the fraternity to provide a unified South Asian voice at the school.

Nu Kappa Epsilon

Nu Kappa Epsilon (ΝΚΕ) is a music sorority which, according to its charter, was established to "promote the growth and development of musical activities and appreciation on campus and in the community where chapters have been formed and to develop in the members the best qualities of character through music." Founded in 1994 at the College of William & Mary, each NKE chapter supports its own music-related philanthropy.

Iota Nu Delta

Iota Nu Delta is the first South Asian interest college fraternity. IND was founded in 1994 at the Binghamton University. It is a member of the North-American Interfraternity Conference since 2007 and National APIA Panhellenic Association since 2016.
