Picto Shohe (born 1959) [1] is an Indian politician from Nagaland. He is an MLA from Atoizu Assembly constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribe community, in Zunheboto District. He won the 2023 Nagaland Legislative Assembly election, representing Nationalist Congress Party. [2]

Early life and education

Shohe is from Atoizu, Zunheboto District, Nagaland. He is the son of late Khozheto. He did his diploma in civil engineering, in 1977 at Khelhoshe Polytechnic, Asukhuto. His wife is a florist. [1]

Career

Shohe won from Atoizu Assembly constituency representing Nationalist Congress Party in the 2023 Nagaland Legislative Assembly election. He polled 8,294 votes and defeated his nearest rival, Kahuli Sema of the Bharatiya Janata Party, by a margin of 602 votes. [3] Earlier on 3 February 2023, Shohe resigned [4] from the 13th Nagaland Assembly as his party, NDDP denied him a ticket, as alliance partner BJP nominated, Sema, an engineer, from Atoizu. [5] He then joined NCP and successfully contested the 2023 election. Later, NCP which won 12 seats in the election, elected Shohe as the legislature party leader. [6]

He first became an MLA winning the 2003 Nagaland Legislative Assembly election as an independent politician after defeating Doshehe Y Sema of NPF by a margin of 3284 votes. [7] He retained the seat in the 2018 Assembly election representing Naga People's Front and defeated former chief minister K. L. Chishi of the Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 838 which was 5.62% of the total votes cast. [7]

The elections to the 13th Nagaland State Legislative Assembly was held on 27th February 2018 in 59 out of its 60 constituencies, with one member elected unopposed. The counting of votes took place on 3rd March 2018. The incumbent Naga People's Front (NPF) lost the elections, while Chief minister T. R. Zeliang retained his seat. Former NPF leader, Neiphiu Rio joined the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) before the elections. Subsequently, with two-thirds majority in the assembly, the NDPP-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance formed the government with Rio as the new Chief Minister of Nagaland.
