Pierre Chen or Chen Tai-Min (born 1958) is a Taiwanese art collector and businessman. He is the founder and chairman of Yageo, which deals with electronic domains and makes electronic components for mobiles, automobiles, laptops and desktops, and key electronic devices. As of May 2024, Forbes estimated his net worth at US$6.1 billion. [1]

Early life

Chen grew up in Kaoshiung in a middle-class Taiwan family. He received a bachelor's degree in engineering from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. [2]

Career

He founded Yageo in 1977. [1] [3]

Chen is the owner of 47 sales offices, 40 manufacturing sites, 20 R&D centers worldwide and was in charge of in Yageo's day-to-day management.[ citation needed ]

He was listed at 550th in the 2021 Forbes list of world billionaires, and 9th in Taiwan. [4]

Art & Wine collection

Chen is well known as an art and wine collector, having collected since 1976. [5]

One of the paintings in his collection is Tamsui, an oil painting by Japanese-period Taiwanese artist Tan Ting-pho. The painting was purchased for $4.5 million (NT$144 million), setting a world record for a ‘NT $100 million’ purchase of an oil painting by an ethnic Chinese artist. [6] Chen's art collection is administered through the Yageo Foundation. [7] [8]

Sotheby's auctioned off 25,000 bottles from his wine collection in 2023 and 2024, including their first ever auction devoted exclusively to Champagne and the first ever single-owner wine auction to take place in Burgundy. [9] [10]

Personal life

He is divorced, with three children, and lives in Taipei, Taiwan. [1]

Tan Teng-pho, was a Taiwanese painter and politician. In 1926, his oil painting Street of Chiayi was featured in the seventh Imperial Art Exhibition in Japan, which was the first time a Taiwanese artist's work could be displayed at the exhibition. Tan devoted his life to education and creation, and was greatly concerned about the development of humanist culture in Taiwan. He was not only devoted to the improvement of his own painting, but also to the promotion of the aesthetic education of the Taiwanese people. He was killed as a result of the February 28 Incident, a 1947 uprising in Taiwan which was repressed by the Kuomintang (KMT).

Yageo Corporation(國巨公司) is a Taiwanese Taiwan-based electronic component manufacturing company, founded in 1977 by Pierre Chen. The company specializes in passive devices — resistors, capacitors and inductors. As of January 2020 ,they were the third largest passive component manufacturer in the world.

Dimitri Mavrommatis is a Greek born asset manager and art collector based in Switzerland with additional residences in Paris, London and New York City. He was on the European advisory board of Christie's and the international advisory board of Sotheby's. In 2014 Sotheby's Geneva featured Mavrommatis' gems in their November jewelry sale in an event the auction house titled "The Passion of Collecting".
