Pietro Antoniani

Pietro Antoniani (Milan, circa 1740 - 1805) was an Italian painter, mainly of sea- and landscapes, often animated with figures, but also of historical subjects. [1]

Biography

Like his Giacinto Gigante in the next generation, and appealing to British tastes, the exotic volcanic eruptions of Vesuvius were a popular subject for the artist. He was likely a pupil of Jacob Philipp Hackert and the precursors of the School of Posillipo. [2]

Theodosius and Saint Ambrose is a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, with assistance from his main pupil Anthony van Dyck, executed c. 1615–1616. It is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Rubens created the preparatory drawing, with the painting almost entirely done by van Dyck, who painted his own similar version of the subject a few years later. In the Rubens version, the architectural background is less defined, Theodosius is bearded and the spear and halberd in van Dyck's own version are omitted.

Pietro Rossi is an oil-on-canvas painting created in 1818–1820 by the Italian artist Francesco Hayez, now in the San Fiorano collection in Milan. A copy is in the Pinacoteca di Brera, also in Milan. Both show Pietro Rossi, accepting an invitation from Francesco Dandolo via a messenger to take command of the Venetian resistance to the expansionist Scaligeri. The work links a heroic past event to contemporary events and a Romantic sensitivity, as in historical novels of the same period such as Alessandro Manzoni's 1840 The Betrothed.
