Education and career

Pinar Oya Yilmaz was born in Izmir, Turkey. After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Geology from Hamilton College in 1976, [1] she received her master's degree from Bryn Mawr College, in which she chose the Taurus Mountains in Turkey as her field of work in 1977. [2] She then earned her Ph.D. at the University of Texas in 1978-1981. She began working for Mobil Oil in 1980 and completed her Ph.D. a year later. [2] [3]

For Yilmaz’s first well site work with Mobil Oil, she was placed offshore of the Cook Inlet, Alaska, United States. [2] She then proceeded to production drilling located in Kansas, Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle, where she helped drill 72 wells. [2] Yilmaz joined Exxon Production Research Company in 1984 and transferred to Exxon Exploration company in 1995. [2]

From 2004 until 2005 Yilmaz was the President of the Geological Society of America's International Division. She worked in the National Science Foundation's Earthscope Science and Education Committee from 2005 until 2007. [4] In a 2018 interview Yilmaz shared some of the challenges she faced while working as a woman in the oil and gas industry. [2]

Her research activities spanned from global paleogeographic studies to regional projects, as well as fault seals in reservoirs. [5]

She was elected from the America Association of Petroleum Geologists and currently serves as Chairman of the 2024 International Petroleum Technology Conference. [6]

The Cutler Formation or Cutler Group is a rock unit that is exposed across the U.S. states of Arizona, northwest New Mexico, southeast Utah and southwest Colorado. It was laid down in the Early Permian during the Wolfcampian epoch.

In petrophysics, Archie's law is a purely empirical law relating the measured electrical conductivity of a porous rock to its porosity and fluid saturation. It is named after Gus Archie (1907–1978) and laid the foundation for modern well log interpretation, as it relates borehole electrical conductivity measurements to hydrocarbon saturations.

Caprock or cap rock is a more resistant rock type overlying a less resistant rock type, analogous to an upper crust on a cake that is harder than the underlying layer.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Paradox Formation</span>

In geology, the Paradox Formation Is a Pennsylvanian age formation which consists of abundant evaporites with lesser interbedded shale, sandstone, and limestone. The evaporites are largely composed of gypsum, anhydrite, and halite. The formation is found mostly in the subsurface, but there are scattered exposures in anticlines in eastern Utah and western Colorado. These surface exposures occur in the Black Mesa, San Juan and Paradox Basins and the formation is found in the subsurface in southwestern Colorado, southeastern Utah, northeastern Arizona and northeastern New Mexico.

The salt tectonics off the Louisiana gulf coast can be explained through two possible methods. The first method attributes spreading of the salt because of sedimentary loading while the second method points to slope instability as the primary cause of gliding of the salt. The first method results in the formation of growth faults in the overlying sediment. Growth faults are normal faults that occur simultaneously with sedimentation, causing them to have thicker sediment layers on the downthrown sides of the faults. In the second method both the salt and the sediment are moving, making it more likely to migrate.

Theron Rhodes Wasson (1887–1970) was a leading American petroleum geologist and engineer, who pioneered the use of geophysical surveys to find oil and gas.

The Halibut Field is an oil field, within the Gippsland Basin offshore of the Australian state of Victoria. The oil field is located approximately 64 km offshore of southeastern Australia. The total area of this field is 26.9 km2 and is composed of 10 mappable units.

Mary Louise Rhodes, an American petroleum geologist, was born April 5, 1916, in Clinton, Missouri. She achieved a bachelor's degree (1938) and a master's degree (1939) in Geology at the University of Missouri. In 1942, Rhodes started her professional career in the production department at the Standard Oil Company of Texas (SOTEX), where she examined well samples, constructed sample logs, and prepared subservience maps and cross-sections. Later she transferred to the exploration department in 1946, she continued to work in this department for the rest of her career. Her duties in this department mainly included travelling the world to collect soil samples and collect to find oil reserves. Throughout her professional career, Rhodes became well known as a carbonate stratigrapher and an expert on several of the Permian basin rock units. Rhodes died on June 26, 1987, from cancer in Midland, Texas.

Maria Spencer was a petroleum geologist. She attended the University of Oklahoma, where she obtained her Master's degree in 1930. After graduating, Maria became a district geologist during the second World War. She worked in several locations throughout her career, such as Dallas, Oklahoma, California, Calgary, Amarillo, and Los Angeles, but most of her work was based out of Midland, Texas. In Midland, Spencer was a part of the Midland One project, which was a well sitting job and doing tests on wildcat wells. From there, she moved to work on Andros in the Bahamas, where she developed the Bahamas Deep Test, which focused mostly on strati-graphic testing.
