Pioneer High School for the Performing Arts was a four-year charter high school within the Alpine School District in American Fork, Utah. It was founded in 2012 and closed in 2018.

A charter school is a school that receives government funding but operates independently of the established state school system in which it is located. Charter schools are an example of public asset privatization.

Alpine School District is the primary school district in northern Utah County, Utah, United States, including the cities of Alpine, American Fork, Cedar Fort, Cedar Hills, Eagle Mountain, Fairfield, Highland, Lehi, Lindon, Orem, Pleasant Grove, Saratoga Springs, and Vineyard. It includes all grades from kindergarten all through high school (K-12). As of 2017, there were 57 elementary schools, 12 junior high schools, nine high schools, and eight special purpose schools serving approximately 78,659 students, making it the largest school district in Utah.

American Fork, Utah City in Utah, United States

American Fork is a city in north-central Utah County, Utah, United States, at the foot of Mount Timpanogos in the Wasatch Range, north of Utah Lake. It is part of the Provo–Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 28,326 in 2015, representing a nearly 20% growth since the 2000 census. The city has grown rapidly since the 1970s.

History

Pioneer High School for the Performing Arts was founded by a group of performing artists living in the region: Caleb Chapman, a saxophonist and youth band director, who became music director; [1] Mindy Smoot Robbins, owner of a Broadway theatre academy; Kymberly Mellon, an actress and director; Sam Payne, another musician; and Derryl Yeager, director of Odyssey Dance Theatre, who became vice chairman of the governing board. Their objectives in founding the school were to reduce the stress of artistic students trying to combine their arts training with a conventional school day and to train performing artists more thoroughly. [2] It opened in 2012 with operations in both American Fork and Lehi and a target enrollment of 1,000. [3] The school started out contracting with Lincoln Interactive, a Pennsylvania company, to provide academic courses entirely online, [2] with mornings reserved for the arts training. [4]

Caleb Chapman American musician

Caleb Chapman is an American music educator, author, entrepreneur, producer, bandleader, and musician from Derry, New Hampshire who currently resides in Utah. A graduate of Brigham Young University, he is the founder and Chairman of Caleb Chapman's Soundhouse, a professional musician training program with locations across the U.S. and the director of Caleb Chapman's Crescent Super Band. Chapman has been recognized for his contributions to music education and has received numerous honors for his work as an educator.

Lehi, Utah City in Utah, United States

Lehi is a city in Utah County, Utah, United States. It is named after Lehi, a prophet in the Book of Mormon. The population was 47,407 at the 2010 census, up from 19,028 in 2000. The center of population of Utah is located in Lehi.

The Utah State Charter School Board placed the school in warning status in 2013 and on turnaround in 2015. [5] [6] In 2016 the state gave it an F grade, [7] but in June 2017 the Charter School Board reduced the school's warning and probation status. [8] By November 2017 the state assigned the school a C grade. [9]

Enrollment was at one point over 450 but fell to 120 after the school terminated the contract for online classes, at that time with Harmony Educational Services; [7] it rose to approximately 140 in the 2016–17 academic year, 70 more students were successfully recruited for 2017–18, and for 2018–19 numbers had been raised from 108 to approximately 120. [5] [6] Retention between 2015–16 and 2016–17 was 42.4%, the lowest of the more than 25 charter schools in the county; [10] it subsequently rose to a high percentage. [8] To boost enrollment, the school had advertised online and on billboards and students had marched in parades. [5] The academic programs were housed until 2017 in a building at 704 S. 600 East St. shared with Aristotle Academy, [7] another charter school that also opened in 2012 but closed in 2017; [10] plans for a new building were not realized. [5] [6]

Gil Jarvie became executive director (principal) in January 2017; he was succeeded in May 2018 by Dallyn Bayles, an actor and singer. [11]

On August 1, 2018, after it was discovered that in order to be financially viable Pioneer High would need 169 students, not the 150 previously estimated, plus additional funds, the governing board decided not to reopen the school for the fall term later that month as planned. [5] [6] [12] [13]

Demographics

In the 2015–16 school year, Pioneer High had a minority enrollment of 13% (predominantly Hispanic), with a diversity score of 0.24. 2% were eligible for a free lunch. The graduation rate was 80-89%. [14]

American Fork High School

American Fork High School is a public high school in American Fork, Utah, United States. Its mascot is the Caveman, chosen as a tribute to Timpanogos Cave. The school is perhaps best known for its award-winning marching band and cross country team. The band has regularly reached regional finals and national finals once, performed in high-profile parades, and been the state champion for over 20 years. The boys cross country team has consistently dominated in Utah and throughout the nation since their first state championship in 2009. American Fork High school is one of the oldest high schools in Utah. In 2017 they became one of the first schools to participate in the 6A division.

The American Heritage Lyceum Philharmonic is an audition-only ensemble for advanced high-school-aged musicians. Students perform masterworks of the repertory alongside sacred music. Named "Best Youth Performing Ensemble" by Best of State Utah in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 the Lyceum Philharmonic is one of the nation's premier youth orchestras. Understanding Sexuality, Gender, and Allyship

USGA is an organization for LGBT Brigham Young University students and their allies. It began meeting on BYU campus in 2010 to discuss issues relating to homosexuality and the LDS Church. However, by December 2012, USGA began meeting off campus at the Provo City Library and is still banned from meeting on campus as of 2018. BYU campus currently offers no official LGBT-specific resources as of 2016. The group maintains political neutrality and upholds BYU's Honor Code. It also asks all participants to be respectful of BYU and the LDS Church. The group received national attention when it released its 2012 "It Gets Better" video. The group also released a suicide prevention message in 2013. A sister organization USGA Rexburg serves the LGBT Brigham Young University–Idaho student community in Rexburg, Idaho.

LGBT students have a long, documented history at Brigham Young University, and have experienced a range of treatment by other students and school administrators over the decades. Brigham Young University (BYU) is the largest religious university in North America and is the flagship institution of the educational system of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Historically, experiences for LGBT BYU students have included being banned from enrolling due to their romantic attractions in the 60s, having nearly 80% of BYU students refusing to live with a gay person in a poll in the 90s, and a ban on coming out into the 2000s. In the contemporary environment there is a continued lack of LGBT-specific resources on campus as of 2018, and LGBT BYU students are currently at risk of expulsion for hugs or same-sex dating and are banned from meeting together in a queer-straight alliance group on campus.
