Pong-Tamale is a community in the Savelugu-Nanton District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a less populated community with nucleated settlement. People in the community are predominantly farmers. It is served with a veterinary college and a Senior School. Pong Tamale is believed to be the Tamale to a community called pong which is close to it.[ citation needed ]
Pongal, also referred to as Thai Pongal (தைப்பொங்கல்), is a multi-day Hindu harvest festival celebrated by Tamils in India and Sri Lanka. It is observed at the start of the month Thai according to Tamil solar calendar, and this festival is celebrated usually on January 14 or January 15 depending on the sun's orbit around earth that particular year. It is dedicated to the sun god, Surya, and corresponds to Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival under many regional names celebrated throughout India. The three days of the Pongal festival are called Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, and Mattu Pongal. Some Tamils celebrate a fourth day of Pongal known as Kanum Pongal.
Savelugu-Nanton Municipal District is a former district that was located in Northern Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988; which was created from the former West Dagomba District Council. It was later elevated to municipal district assembly status on 1 March 2012. However on 28 June 2012, it was split off into two new districts: Savelugu Municipal District and Nanton District. The municipality was located in the eastern part of Northern Region and had Nanton as its capital town.
Tamale Metropolitan District is one of the sixteen districts in Northern Region, Ghana. Originally created as a municipal district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Tamale Municipal District, which was created from the former West Dagomba District Council, until it was elevated to metropolitan district assembly status in August 2004. Later, a small northern part of the district was split off to create Sagnarigu District on 24 June 2012 ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Tamale Metropolitan District. The metropolis is located in the northwest part of Northern Region and has Ghana as its capital city. The metro poly is the central business hub of the region.
The Tamale Sports Stadium is a multipurpose stadium in Tamale, Ghana, mostly used for football matches as well as a place for hosting events and serves as the home stadium of Real Tamale United, Tamale City FC and Steadfast FC. The stadium which hosted some matches during the 2008 African Cup of Nations has a capacity of about 20,000 and it was completed in 2008 by the Shanghai Construction Group of China. The stadium looks similar to the Sekondi-Takoradi Stadium.
