Pontso S. M. Sekatle (born 26 May 1957) is a politician and academic in Lesotho. Sekatle lectured at the National University of Lesotho from 1984 to 2001. [1] In June 2001,she was appointed to the Senate of Lesotho, [2] and on July 6,2001 she became Minister of Health and Social Welfare. [3] She was a member of the Qacha's Nek constituency for third time with the win in the elections in 2012 and was appointed the Minister of Local government and Chieftainship Affairs.
Dr. Sekatle in her capacity as the Minister of Local government,executed the local elections in 2005,the first of its kind in Lesotho and originally envisioned during 1968.
Sekatle was born on 26 May 1957 in Quthing District of Lesotho. She completed her primary education at Quthing Primary,secondary at Mopeli Secondary School and her Cambridge School Certificate in Masitise High School. [4] Sekalte started her career as a lecturer of National University of Lesotho and went on to become the Head of the Department of Political and Administrative Studies. In June 2001,she was appointed as a member of the Upper House of the Representatives. Her husband,Semano Sekatle,is also a member of the government,currently serving as Minister of Public Service. In the May 2002 parliamentary election,which was her first election,she stood as the ruling Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) candidate in the Qacha's Nek constituency,previously held by Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili (who contested the Tsoelike constituency instead),and won 72.4% of the vote. [6] Following the election,in June 2002,she was moved from her position as Minister of Health to that of Minister of Local Government. [7] Following the February 2007 parliamentary election,she remained in the latter position in the government of March 2007. [5] She was a member of the Qacha's Nek constituency for third time with the win in the elections in 2012 and was appointed the Minister of Local government and Chieftainship Affairs. [8] Sekatle joined the new Pakalitha Mosisili-led splinter party Democratic Congress on its formation in 2012. [9] In December 2018,Semano Sekatle,Pontso's husband and fellow Democratic Congress legislator,defected to Tom Thabane's ruling All Basotho Convention. Pontso soon after quit her post as Democratic Congress's Women League president. [10] Speculation that Pontso would too soon follow suit and defect to the All Basotho Convention was put to rest in April 2019,when she was officially presented to ABC masses at one of Thabane's rallies in Peka,Leribe,as one of the All Basotho Convention's latest catches. Dr. Sekatle was appointed as the Minister of Local government with an aim of realizing the decentralization drive of the Lesotho government envisioned during 1968. She is considered to have driven the local elections in 2005,the first of its kind in Lesotho. Dr. Sekatle has also headed various executive committees like Lesoth Congress for Democracy Women's League (DCWL) and Democratic Congress League (DCL). She started as a Secretary General in 2008 and went on to become the President of both the committees,which she headed as of 2016. She was also the Deputy President for African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM),Deputy President for Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CWLG),Director of UNESCO Lesotho and Director of Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC). She has published various works in the field of public administration,governance and institution building. [8]
The history of people living in the area now known as Lesotho goes back as many as 400 years. The present Lesotho emerged as a single polity under King Moshoeshoe I in 1822. Under Moshoeshoe I,Basotho joined other clans in their struggle against the Lifaqane associated with famine and the reign of Shaka Zulu from 1818 to 1828.
Politics of Lesotho takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic constitutional monarchy,whereby the Prime Minister of Lesotho is the head of government,and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of Parliament,the Senate and the National Assembly. Bethuel Pakalitha Mosisili is a former Mosotho politician who was the fourth prime minister of Lesotho from May 1998 to June 2012 and again from March 2015 to June 2017. He led the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) to a near-total victory in the 1998 election,and under his leadership the party also won majorities in the 2002 and 2007 elections. While serving as Prime Minister,Mosisili was also Minister of Defence.

Ntsu Mokhehle was a Lesotho politician. He founded Basutoland African Congress (BAC) in 1952. He founded Basutoland Congress Party in 1957 then later in 1997 founded Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD). He served as the third prime minister of Lesotho from 2 April 1993 to 17 August 1994 and from 14 September 1994 to 29 May 1998.
Ntlhoi Motsamai is a Lesotho politician who has been the Speaker of the National Assembly twice;first,from 1999 to 2012,then from March 2015 to June 2017. Motsamai worked as a teacher before entering politics.
General elections were held in Lesotho on 17 February 2007. They had originally been scheduled to be held in April or May 2007. In October 2006,Tom Thabane left the ruling Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) and formed a new party,the All Basotho Convention (ABC),and 17 other members of parliament joined him. This left the LCD with a narrow majority of 61 out of 120 seats. On the advice of Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili,King Letsie III dissolved parliament on November 24,2006,and the election was scheduled for February 17,2007. The bringing forward of the date caused dissatisfaction amongst the opposition,which expressed concern that it would not allow sufficient time for campaigning and electoral preparations. It was believed that the election was called early due to the possibility that there would be further defections from the LCD,depriving it of its majority.

He was formerly the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly before the party formed part of a coalition with the All Basotho Convention in May 2020. From 2015 to 2017,he served as the Minister of Gender,Youth,Sports and Recreation. Mokhothu is the MP for the Qhoali No. 68 constituency.
