Portsoken (electoral ward)

Portsoken Ward is an electoral district in the City of London, England. [1] (See also Portsoken). It returns an Alderman and four Councilmen [2] to the Court of Common Council of the City of London Corporation.

2017 Aldermanic by-election

Michael Bear became Alderman in 2005 and resigned in 2017. This led to the first Aldermanic election in the City of London Corporation contested by the Labour Party. [3] [4] The election was won by Prem Goyal, founder of the All People's Party, [5] although he stood as an independent. [6]

2022 Common Council election

The Common Council election in Portsoken Ward recorded the highest turnout in the 2022 Citywide Common Council Elections with 57.6% of the electorate casting their vote. The average turnout across the rest of the City of London was much lower at 36.5%. Two incumbent councillors, Munsur Ali and Jason Paul Pritchard, who were elected as Labour candidates in 2017, stood jointly and were both re-elected. [8] John Fletcher and Henry Jones stood jointly and were both re-elected. [9] Changes in voteshare are by party for the Labour candidates and by candidate for independent candidates who previously stood as independents.

The 2017 City of London Corporation election took place on 23 March 2017 to elect members of the Court of Common Council in the City of London Corporation. The election was the first time apart from a 2014 by-election that partisan candidates were elected to the body. Fifteen of the hundred seats on the council were won by political parties: the newly created Temple & Farringdon Together party and the Labour Party.

The 2009 City of London Corporation election took place on 15 March 2009 to elect members of the Court of Common Council in the City of London Corporation, England. These elections take place every four years. 128 candidates contested 100 seats. This yielded only 13 wards where an election was needed to determine who should take the position. As in the previous election, most Council members were elected as independents. The election was the first to ever be contested by the Labour party, who claimed to have decided to run in order to provide voters a choice, and that residents were often overlooked in favour of the business lobby.

William Campbell-Taylor is a Church of England vicar of St Thomas' Church, Clapton Common in the Diocese of London. In his semi-autobiography he admits that he was suspended for sexual misconduct while in training for the priesthood at Westcott House. He was the first candidate standing for a political party to be elected to the Common Council of the City of London Corporation, breaking the tradition of Aldermen and Councilmen in the financial capital being elected as non-party political independents, which outcome City A.M. Newspaper described as "even more controversial than could be expected". He won the by-election in Portsoken for the Labour Party in March 2014 and stood down as Common Councilman before the elections of March 2017.

The City of London Corporation elections occur regularly to provide the elected representatives who run the City of London Corporation.

The All People's Party (APP) was a political party established in the United Kingdom in 2013. When it was founded it had two sitting councillors in the London Borough of Southwark: Althea Smith had formerly been a member of the Labour Party. In the Southwark London Borough Council election, 2014 the APP stood 15 candidates. However, despite gaining 2,828 votes, they failed to get any councillors elected.
